In a world filled with artificiality and pretense, Dr. Rolling was one of the realest. A beacon of Black excellence, his credentials were extensive and unparalleled: a Doctor of Medicine, Doctor of Podiatric Medicine, and a former Captain in the U.S. Army. With specialties spanning microbiology, virology, infectious diseases, and biochemical warfare, he was a force in the medical and infectious disease world.
Born in Fort Polk, Louisiana to Edith Marie Black Rolling on March 17, 1964, he was known by those closest to him as "Ced" or "Sid." Growing up as an Army "brat" he lived in many places including Virginia, Okinawa, Japan and Kaiserslautern, Germany and eventually moved to Nevada where he was a star athlete in football, baseball, and track at Valley High School in Las Vegas, Nevada, graduating in 1982.
He attended Weber State University in Ogden, Utah, first on a football scholarship and then an Army ROTC scholarship. He was the first African-American to graduate with a double major in Microbiology and Chemistry with a minor in Military Science in 1986. It was at Weber State where he met his future wife, Catherine Loader, with whom he had four of his children, Nicole, Ashley, Jordyn, and Nathan. They were married on September 22, 1989 and later divorced after 23 years together. His eldest son, Branden was born in Las Vegas in 1985.
After graduating from Weber State, he was awarded a fellowship to attend graduate school at the University of Nevada-Reno where he received a Masters in Cellular and Molecular Biology in 1988. He proudly graduated from the California School of Podiatric Medicine where he received his DPM in 1992. He completed his residency in Podiatric surgery at Tripler Army Hospital in Honolulu, Hawaii in 1993. Dr. Rolling later completed his MD at the University of Health Sciences Antigua.
He served on active duty in the Army Medical Service Corps for three years with the rank of Captain and was stationed at Fort Benning, Georgia and practiced medicine at Martin Army Community Hospital. He completed the Master Fitness Course, Advanced Cardiac Life Support, Combat Casualty Course, Medical Management of Chemical Biological Casualties, Airborne and Pathfinder training.
For two decades, he dedicated himself to the people of Peru. Affectionately known as "Dr. Chocolate," he didn't just provide medical care; he transformed entire communities. Establishing clinics and collaborating with indigenous leaders, he seamlessly blended Western medicine with traditional indigenous practices.
Through his NGO, Tropical Pathology and Infectious Disease Association (TPaIDA), Dr. Rolling mentored aspiring doctors, giving them real-world experience in Peru's hospitals. With a steadfast mission to bridge the diversity gap in medicine, he tirelessly championed for inclusivity and opportunity as a professor at Weber State University, Salt Lake Community College, Utah Valley University, Grand Canyon University, Philander Smith University, and Shorter College. His profound expertise and genuine compassion ensure a legacy that will echo for generations.
Beyond his professional accomplishments, Dr. Rolling was a force of character. He was a proud Black man, a proud father, and an even prouder grandpa. His authenticity was unwavering, and he fearlessly let people know he was not one to be trifled with, often stating, "I'm not a teddy bear." He taught his family the importance of standing firm in one's beliefs: to always leave a place better than when you found it, never compromise for anyone, and understand that service to others is the pinnacle of success.
Dr. Lane Cedric Rolling, passed away unexpectedly on October 3, 2023 in Little Rock, Arkansas. He was only 59 years old. His family is beyond devastated and heartbroken.
He is survived by his five children, Branden Collinsworth, Nicole (Chris) Shirra, Ashley Rolling, Jordyn Rolling, and Nathan Rolling; his three grandchildren who were the pride and joy of his life, Mila, Heath and Graham, who knew him as "Pops;" his two brothers and one sister, their families, and his very best friend, his mother.
Family and friends are welcome to attend a celebration of life, which will be held at Southern Nevada Veterans Memorial Cemetery on October 20, 2023 at 9:20am. The address is: 1900 Veterans Memorial Dr, Boulder City, NV 89005.

Rolling family
I am sincerely sorry for your loss...your Sid was a very dear friend. I first met Sid and Hinckey and family when they arrived in Las Vegas on pecos and tropicana from K-town Germany. I enjoyed playing football at Valley HS: he was the best receiver ever...eyes and hands like a radar! We also enjoyed studying together and dreaming about college and all the successful things we were going to accomplish. Sid did it all. I had not spoken to Sid for many years but finally connected with him on Facebook and by phone a few months ago in July. We were able to catch up on life and family. His family was his pride and joy.
"Dr Rolling" also gave my wife advice concerning her autoimmune disease and scleroderma. He is a true hero and lifelong friend.
I love Sid and will miss him dearly.

I met Dr. Rolling on line. I had the pleasure to get to know the man. He gave me an opportunity to have an hour and half interview live on Covid-19 Chat Group in the early stages of Covid. I would reach out for information and he would call on his cell phone and tell me he was coming back to Hawaii. He always said you better have the good stuff ready to eat. Godspeed and peace to the family. I miss you my Brother, Thank you for your Service.

I first met Ced in Germany as his K-Town basketball team came to Spang and played mine. We played the same position so we matched up. About two years later I was walking through the halls at Valley High School and he ran up to me and ask if I used to live on Spang. We bonded as two military B.R.A.T.S. That now attended a "civilian" school. We both got jobs at the local Burger King and played a lot of basketball.
I graduated a year before him when his lovely mom called me and told me Ced had hurt his knee in a HS football game. He was so upset about it! But the world benefited from that injury because I think it motivated him to really dive into the medical field in a much more serious way. Look at all the good he did!

When my youngest daughter was battling leukemia, Ced was in Chicago doing a presentation and he and I had dinner with my kids. He was great with my daughter and gave her so much hope. After that he called every month to check on her. Then we both bragged about our kids! Miss you my friend! The world lost a very good man!

I never met Lane, but seeing his childhood picture with that beautiful smile reminded me of his daughter Ashley. Who is and has grown into such a brave and beautiful strong woman. I see now where she got her smile from and I am sure many other great qualities. My condolences to his family, he truly lived an amazing life.

With sincere thoughts and meditations, I am asking the Egun (Ancestors) to receive this young spirit with warmth and love from his lineages (Mother and Father). In a short time on this planet, Dr. Rolling committed his journey to help others at home and in far away places. Now, he is returning HOME to ORUN and will travel the long path to reach that realm. May his limbs and deeds speak highly of his life's work, while on this planet. He was the first doctor I spoke to on COVID and he served humanity as best he could. I was so amazed of his support given to the people in Peru. Although, his transition is sudden to us, I know he was working somewhere with human beings and youth, when he was summoned HOME. Rest in Power Doc! and to your family, I send my condolences and spirit of strength. If you recall his name and deeds in life, this will help as he 'crosses over'.Oloye Yeye Atunwase EsutadeO

Dr. Rolling quickly became not only the infectious disease doctor that I listened to but he became my big brother. He met some of my family in Arkansas and told me that they were his cousins too. I will sorely miss his wisdom and insight into medicine and science. My sincere condolences go out to his mom, brothers and sister, children, grandchildren, and wife.

I remember the first day of class and by mistake I called Doc Mr. Rolling, He looked at me and said it's Doctor Rolling. From that day on we had an amazing time at Shorter College, and I can't forget all the great times we had together. You will be truly missed and loved!! I'll see you on the other side Doc!!!
