Larry Johnson passed away quietly at home at the age of 76, leaving behind a legacy of love, service, resilience, and an unforgettable sense of humor. Born in Lincoln, Nebraska to Dolores and Carroll Johnson, he had a deep passion for music and played the accordion professionally during his teenage years. He later pursued a degree in civil engineering from the University of Texas at Arlington, graduating in 1970. That same year, he married his college sweetheart, Rhea Flynn, before joining the U.S. Air Force, where he served for six years flying the C-9A.

After his military service, Larry continued his aviation career as a pilot for Brani and Southwest Airlines. At 45, he was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease, which forced him to retire from the career he loved. Despite this, he spent the next 32 years facing every challenge the disease brought with grace and faith as his health declined.

Larry was a man who embraced life's adventures. He loved flying, baking, camping, gambling, July 4th fireworks, playing his keyboard, and giving Halloween rides on his flatbed trailer - always seeking fun experiences to share with those around him. Serving on the team for Cursillo Retreats and acting as donut "czar " for his men's Bible Study group were regular activities. He taught his kids to cook, camp, and do all the practical "fix it" things that needed to be done in life. He dedicated time to coaching soccer and working with the high school youth group at church, always encouraging and supporting his children both on and o the field. Never one to do things the ordinary way, he built a zip line in the backyard with the kids and in true pilot fashion, rented a Cessna and allowed them to toilet paper bomb the neighborhood-because why not? Larry's antics were legendary and made every moment more fun, bringing laughter to everyone around him.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 54 years, Rhea, and their three children: Kathryn Shrift (Michael), Douglas (Crystelle), and Garrett, three cherished grandchildren-Luke, Jack, and Gabriel Shrift, along with brothers Dale and Paul, and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister Mary Lynn Parsons.

The family would like to thank his sister-in-law Teresa Walters and friend Bill McNeill who for many years sat with Larry to provide free time for Rhea. In lieu of flowers, please send gifts to The Society of Saint Vincent de Paul, c/o St. Vincent De Paul Catholic Church, 5819. W. Pleasant Ridge Road, Arlington, TX 76016.

Larry will be remembered for his positive attitude and beautiful witness in facing the unexpected setbacks of life with grace.
