BELLVILLE: Larry Oswalt was passionate about many things; his career as a locksmith, his appreciation of nature, wildlife and the outdoors; his freedoms as an American, and most importantly, his loving family.
Larry R. Oswalt Jr., 67, of Bellville passed away peacefully, Sunday, March 16, 2025 at home following an extended illness.
The son of Larry R. Oswalt Sr. and Charlene Fliger Oswalt, Larry was born and raised in Newville on January 1, 1958 and he graduated from Clear Fork high school.
He first met Penny Mowry when the two were teenagers. His love for Penny was strong and on November 27, 1981 Larry and Penny were married. The two celebrated 43 years of marriage.
Locksmithing and safecracking were in his family's roots. Larry's grandparents and father were locksmiths and at the age of 13, he began working on locks himself. With decades of experience Larry, along with his son, operated Advanced Lock and Key here in Mansfield. Larry was a member of SAVTA (Safe and Vault Technicians of America) and ALOA (Association of Locksmiths of America.
He appreciated nature, hunting deer, turkey and even rattle snakes. He enjoyed the open water, and looked forward to fishing and boating.
"Confident", some would describe Larry as stubborn or even strong willed. One thing was for sure, with Larry, you knew where you stood. He did have a softer side, was playful, teased and wasn't afraid to act goofy. Larry loved and is survived by his beloved Jack Russell Terrier, Thor
He is survived by his loving wife Penny (Mowry) Oswalt; sons Larry Oswalt III (Jessica) and Jeremiah (Danielle) Oswalt, daughters Amanda (Brad) Schmidt and Alyson (Cody) Payne; grandchildren Brooke, Rhea, Ben, Phoebe, Abbey, Porter, and Jesse; numerous nieces, nephews and extended family.
Along with his parents he was preceded in death by his son Joshua Oswalt; grandson Cooper Payne; and siblings Jeff Oswalt, Jami Soto, and Mike Oswalt.
A memorial gathering will be held, Thursday, March 20, 2025 from 4-7 pm in the Bellville Snyder Funeral Home.
