In Loving Memory of Lawrence R. Schultz

Born: October 17, 1936

Passed: September 3, 2025

Lawrence "Larry" R. Schultz was born in Detroit, Michigan, the middle child of three, to John E. Schultz and Grace Ann Schultz. Raised alongside his sisters, Larry grew up immersed in the floral business-a family legacy that would span generations and touch the lives of the Schultz, Watkins, Pollman, and Carrian families.

A Life Rooted in Flowers

As a young boy, Larry helped his father build Maple Lane Florist of Troy, now known as Della's Maple Lane. He often recounted stories of salvaging cinder blocks from a condemned building nearby, hauling them by wheelbarrow, and chipping away the concrete so they could be reused to construct the shop-right in front of their home on Big Beaver Road. That foundation still stands today, lovingly maintained by family.

Larry attended Guardian Angels Catholic Grade School and later Clawson High School, where he lettered in football as a halfback. A gifted athlete, he excelled in scuba diving, ice hockey, baseball, basketball, bowling, and even bodybuilding well into his 60s.

Building a Legacy

At 26, Larry married Harriet Root, and together they had a son, Erick John Schultz. During this time, Larry and his father established Maple Lane Florist of Clawson. Larry eventually owned both the Troy and Clawson locations, later selling the Troy store to his sister Della. In the mid-1970s, he founded Flowers by Michelle, named after his then-wife, Michelle Porath.

A Turning Point

While going through his second divorce, Larry faced one of life's darkest valleys. He shared a story of driving home in tears, whispering "Jesus, I'm sorry" over and over. The next day, something had changed. His demeanor softened. He quit smoking and drinking overnight. His employees noticed the transformation-he had found peace. Larry developed a deep love for Scripture and began attending church regularly. His life took a new direction.

He became active in the Full Gospel Business Men's Fellowship and later served as an assistant minister to a local evangelist couple.

A Devoted Father and Grandfather

In 1979, Larry married Pam Means, and they welcomed a daughter, Tiffany Lee Schultz. Their marriage lasted ten years. After selling his businesses, Larry moved to Petoskey, Michigan with Tiffany before returning to Rochester Hills.

In his later years, Larry worked in the very flower shops he helped build, now run by his nieces. He also played a vital role in helping raise his grandchildren, pouring love and wisdom into their lives.

A Vision of Heaven

Larry once shared a divine vision-a breathtaking floral garden in Heaven. He believed God would entrust him to care for these heavenly blooms some day, describing them as indescribably beautiful.

A Generous Spirit

Larry was known for his selflessness. He'd give you the shirt off his back, even if it meant personal sacrifice. He couldn't bear to see others go without.

Final Years and Legacy

Larry spent his final two years at The James in Ferndale, where he was affectionately known as the "Town Evangelist." He offered prayers to staff and residents alike, leaving a lasting impression. The property manager even attended a special gathering held in Larry's honor.

We will remember Larry's mischievous humor, his love of pranks, his unwavering compassion, and his deep devotion to God and His Word. He will be missed-until we meet again in Heaven. Larry, take care of God's garden.
