Leann C. Vandermissen, 72, of Wilson, passed away surrounded by family on Thursday, April 10, 2025 at Pinecrest Medical Care Facility.
She was born on January 10, 1953 in Elgin, IL, daughter to Lois J. (nee Olesen) Smith and Gene U. Johnson. Leann was raised in Wisconsin and then moved to the U.P. where she has resided for 50 years. Leann committed her life to the nursing profession. It was her passion, it was her calling and she continued to advance from Aid to LPN to RN Supervisor, retiring from Pinecrest, where she had spent most of her career.
On September 20, 1985, the former Leann (nee Johnson) Borglin married George Vandermissen in Dickinson County. She became a member of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Church in Bark River. Together they created a blessed life. They built a beautiful camp and home. Leann could be found outside most days and enjoyed horse back riding with friends, dancing with her husband, gardening and fishing whenever possible. She loved all of her family especially her grandchildren. She was a volunteer at the St. Vincent de Paul food pantry. Leann was a determined, hard-working, loving woman that was always a willing volunteer for a good cause.
Among survivors include her children, Carol (Tom) Tighe, Scott (Bonnie) Vandermissen, Naomi (Ross) McAllister, Ben (Ivey) Vandermissen, Sarah (Phil) Hernandez, and Joshua Vandermissen; her 19 grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, her siblings, Michael (JeanAnn) Johnson, Vonnie (Roy) Hubbard, Sandy (John) Prince, and Steve Smith; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. Leann was preceded in death by her husband George Vandermissen, her mother Lois J (Olesen) Smith, her stepfather, Chall Smith and her father Gene Uhle Johnson.
Visitation will be on Thursday, April 24th beginning at 3:30 and the Upper Peninsula Nurses Honor Guard will honor Leann's years in the nursing profession at 3:45 p.m. Visitation will then continue until the time of the Mass of Christian Burial at 5 p.m. at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Church in Bark River with Rev. Darryl Pepin officiating. At the conclusion of the mass, a meal will be served in the church hall. Burial will take place in Bark River Twp. Cemetery on Friday April 25th at 10:30 a.m.
