Leon Szymczyk, 75, of South Windsor, beloved husband of Sophie (Bialko) Szymczyk died peacefully at home surrounded by his family after a courageous battle with Parkinson's Disease and Dementia.
Leon was born in Siderka, Poland, son of the late Jozef and Zenaida (Matys) Szymczyk. He came to the U.S. and lived in New Britain where he met his wife, before moving to South Windsor. Leon worked as a machinist most of his life until his illness. He enjoyed fishing, evenings at the casinos with his wife and was a hockey fan of the Hartford Whalers and the Pittsburgh Penguins. Leon was also a member of All Saints Orthodox Church in Hartford. He was a devoted family man, friend, and helped anyone in need.
Along with his wife Sophie, he leaves his children, Elizabeth Szymczyk of Enfield, Julian Szymczyk of South Windsor, and John Szymczyk of Stamford; his granddaughter, Daniella Natale of Enfield; his brothers-in-law, and sisters-in-law, Stanislaw Bialko and his wife Elzbieta of New Britain, Maria Magyar of Lisbon, and Danuta "Kazia" Bialko of New Britain and their families; his nieces and nephew, Irene and Dan Murphy of Rocky Hill, and Ela and Marek Doman of Poland; and his cousins, Loretta, Alina, Alexander and Eugenia. He was predeceased by his sister, Raisa Doman.
His family wishes to thank the nurses and staff at Hartford Healthcare Hospice for their compassionate care and support, especially Lisa and Taylor.
His family will receive friends on Friday, August 9, 2024, from 5-7 p.m., at the Samsel & Carmon Funeral Home, 419 Buckland Rd., South Windsor. A Funeral will be celebrated on Saturday, August 10, 2024, 10 a.m., meeting directly at All Saints Orthodox Church, 205 Scarborough St., Hartford. A burial will follow at Wapping Cemetery in South Windsor.
Donations can be made in Leon's memory to charities supporting Parkinson's Disease research.
