Gary L. Newton

Gary Lee Newton, 63, of Ellington, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, January 8, 2025, surrounded by his loved ones. Born on July 19, 1961, in Hartford, CT, Gary was the son of Nancy Newton-Therrien and the late Barry Newton. He was raised in South Windsor and went to South Windsor High School. Over the years, Gary worked in home improvement and took on various hands-on jobs. For almost 20 years, he was employed in the landscaping department at the University of Connecticut, where he formed lasting relationships with students and faculty. He truly enjoyed going to work each day, finding fulfillment in his interactions with the UConn community.
A passionate outdoorsman, Gary loved spending time on the water, whether fishing or boating in both freshwater and saltwater. He especially looked forward to his summer Sundays lobstering in Long Island Sound. Gary's love for adventure extended to his fondness for street bikes and jet skis-he always had a "need for speed." In addition to his love of the outdoors, Gary had a sweet tooth, indulging in his favorite snacks, candy, and Dr. Pepper.
Gary is survived by his mother, Nancy Newton-Therrien and her husband, Albert, of Vernon; his daughter, Taylor Newton, and her fiancé, Zachary Mottram, of East Hartford; his sister, Cindi Francis and her husband, John, of Winterville Plantation, ME; his niece, Cassie McKee and her husband, Steven, of Ellington; his uncle, Gary Ryan and his wife, Connie, of Winder, GA; and his dear friend, DeRonde "DeeDee" Czelazewicz of East Windsor. He was predeceased by his brother, Barry L. Newton II.
Family and friends are invited to a visitation on Thursday, January 23, 2024, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Samsel & Carmon Funeral Home, 419 Buckland Road, South Windsor. A prayer service will follow at 7:00 p.m. Burial will be private at the family's request.
