Leonard Eugene "Len" Elliott ObituaryIn the evening of August 18, 2025, Len passed away at Fairmount Health Center in Willoughby Ohio and was 95 years old.
Len was born on February 19, 1930 in Cleveland, Ohio. He was the second child and first son of Grace Lillian Stumphf and Leonard Patrick Elliott.
Len and his sister Gloria grew up on East 143rd in East Cleveland. Leonard attended Shaw High School in East Cleveland where he was a star athlete on the swim and football teams. He was offered an athletic scholarship at Ohio State University which he opted to decline.
He also spent time in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan during the summers near Kenton, Michigan. He worked summers with road construction crews there when he wasn't hunting with his father. He also worked as a deck hand on a merchant ship doing business on the Great Lakes during the Spring of 1948. He was in Flagstaff, Arizona working for the US Forestry service later in the fall of 1948.
One of the skills he learned in high school was typing, which would serve him well during his two periods of enlistment in the US Army. He was a valued member of the command staff and traveled extensively around Europe. His final discharge was in April 1954 as a sergeant. He graduated from Kent State University in 1956 and started working at the Cleveland Plain Dealer. After 20 years at the Plain Dealer, he shifted companies and worked for Austin Company. He focused on newspaper publishing facilities, both new construction and renovations.
Leonard was an inspiration to his colleagues and professional contacts. A former protégé recently attributed his success in the publishing field to Leonard's mentoring encouragement and support. That protégé, Dario DiMare, was a recent featured speaker at Commencement at Kent State University, Leonard's Alma Mater.
He always enjoyed discovering gourmet delights and especially oatmeal. Some of his favorites were Irish oatmeal in Ireland, with whole kernels, and a larger grain oatmeal from Snoqualmie Falls, Washington. On one occasion, he found an outstanding bowl of oatmeal in New Zealand.
Leonard shared a passion for model trains with his wife, Sally. Together they amassed a collection of model trains that eventually filled a very special model train room in their house. The city/village that grew in the train room had a circus, a park, a mountain, a tunnel, an alpine village and a nude beach! When it came time to relocate the layout, it was donated to the Western Reserve Historical Society.
Leonard filled the room with his generous and kind soul. Time spent with him was lively and memorable. His presence will be greatly missed.
Leonard follows his beloved Sally Carran Elliott, parents Leonard Patrick Elliott and Grace Stumphf Elliott, sister Gloria Marie Greiner and niece Susan Lynn Greiner.
Len is survived by his nieces Deborah (JoAnn Porter) Greiner, PharmD, and Judy (Ken) Goskey. Len leaves behind his grandnephew Dan (Cathy) Goskey and grandniece Emily (Nicholas) Junk, his great grandnieces Ryan Nicole Junk, Devyn Daisy Junk and great grandnephew Patrick Harrison Goskey.
Len leaves behind his esteemed Carran family, especially nephew William Bowen, PhD / Chieh-Chen Bowen, PhD, grandnephews Theodore Bowen, MD, Timothy Bowen, and Kingsley Bowen and twenty-five other family members.
A special thanks to Marie Morelli and Joel Rathbone, cherished and loved members of the extended Elliott family.
Len will be interred at Lakeview Cemetery with a grand view of Daffodil Hill with his beloved Sally.
