Leroy Edwin Whipple, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend, passed away peacefully on October 25, 2025, at the age of 73, in Altoona, PA. Born on May 5, 1952, in Franklin County, PA, Leroy was a beacon of joy and laughter for all who knew him, leaving behind a legacy of love, humor, and unwavering devotion to his family.
Leroy was the cherished son of Edwin and Josephine Whipple (Gassner). He was married to his beloved wife, Ethel (Wisler) Whipple, for 50 glorious years this October, a partnership built on love, respect, and shared dreams. They wed on October 5, 1975, in Waynesboro, PA, and together they cultivated a rich life filled with laughter, adventure, and countless cherished memories.
Leroy was preceded in death by his parents Edwin and Josephine, as well as a son, Aaron Michael Whipple.
Leroy is survived by his son Joshua Whipple, his daughter Chana Shaffer and her husband John Shaffer IV, and his two grandsons, Eli and Tate Shaffer, who brought him immense joy and pride. He also leaves behind his two sisters Rebecca Martin and Thursa Peck, and brother-in-law Richard Peck as well as two furry four-legged buddies, his dogs, Nettie and Scooter who never left his side. Leroy's family extended to include numerous nephews, nieces, great-nephews, and great-nieces, all of whom felt the warmth of his love and humor.
Leroy dedicated over 30 years of his life to Sheetz, where he served as a store manager and earned several awards for his exemplary leadership and outstanding performance, including Store of the Year. One of his biggest and proudest accomplishments was being chosen to manage a one of a kind and (at the time) the largest Sheetz store in 2004. His work ethic was surpassed only by his commitment to his family and friends. He was known for his contagious sense of humor and unmatched sarcasm, always knowing how to make others smile even in the toughest of times.
A true animal lover, Leroy had a special fondness for all creatures great and small, particularly horses and chickens. He enjoyed antiquing, keeping up with the news, and cheering on his favorite WWE superstars. His passions painted a vivid picture of a man who embraced life fully, always eager to share his interests and stories with those around him.
Leroy's passing leaves a profound void in the hearts of those he touched. He was a proud "PaPa" whose love for his family knew no bounds. His spirit of kindness, dedication to family, and infectious laughter will be dearly missed.
A graveside service to celebrate Leroy's life will be held on October 29, 2025, at 10:00 a.m., at Sons of Israel within Lincoln Cemetery located at 948 Lincoln Way E.,
Chambersburg, PA 17201. Friends and family are invited to gather, share memories, and honor the remarkable life of Leroy Edwin Whipple.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you consider making a donation to a local animal shelter in Leroy's memory, honoring his lifelong love for animals.
Leroy Edwin Whipple, your legacy will live on in our hearts forever and you will be missed immensely.
