Mr. Leslie Bernard Bailey Sr. was born November 11, 1945 in Newport News, VA to the late Deacon Roosevelt and Missionary Sally Mae Bailey, at age four he and his family moved to Surry County, VA where he grew up. He was the third of five children, two sisters: Mae Diane Bailey, Richmond, VA and Celestine Joyce Clary (deceased), two brothers: Floyd Bailey (deceased) and Leroy Hawkins (deceased). Leslie had four children: Sherman King, Jerry King (Karen), Leslie Bailey Jr. and Kim Crowell (Kevin). He was also the proud grandfather of eleven grandchildren. He is survived by his devoted and dedicated friend Annie Mae Price.
Leslie received his elementary education at L.P. Jackson Elementary School in Surry County, VA and graduated from Sussex Central High School, Sussex County, VA. Shortly after graduating high school, he was employed by the Newport News Shipbuilding and Dry Dock Company, where he retired after 42 years of dedicated service.
Leslie had a strong conviction that God is alive and real, he had several testimonies to this effect. He was brought up in a strict christian atmosphere with God fearing parents. He accepted the Lord at an early age. At age fifteen he was lead guitarist for the Sensational Morningstar Gospel Singers, where he sang lead and tenor for the group. He and his family joined the Liberty Baptist Church in Waverly, VA. Where he sang with the choir and taught Vacation Bible School as a faithful member. He rededicated his life to Christ in 1990 at Christian Union United Church of Christ, where he served as Deacon, assisted with Sunday School, sang with various choirs of the church, served on the usher board and as trustee, he was a faithful and active member until God called him home. Leslie was a people person, after several near death experiences he decided to put God first in his life.
Leslie number one hobby was fishing, he also enjoyed playing his guitar, cooking and singing. He has sung all over the peninsula and various parts of Virginia, the Carolinas, Maryland and New York. He would always tell you he "loves the rhythm of a shout song". His favorite song is "I can't even walk without Him holding my hand". He was also a member of the Rising Star Male Chorus and had his own group called "Les Bailey and Company".
The family has requested, if you can wear any shades of blue to the service.
it is the desire of the Bailey/ Crowell families that you keep them in your thoughts and prayers.
