Leslie Alfred Morkert, 76, passed away on March 24, 2025, surrounded by his loving family. He was born on October 25, 1948, in Oregon City, Oregon, and was the middle child of 12 siblings.
Les joined the United States Army at the young age of 17, which led to a distinguished 20-year career where he proudly served as a drill sergeant. While stationed at Fort Polk, fate led him to a blind date with Merikay Stewart. The two immediately hit it off and went on to share 53 wonderful years of marriage.
After retiring from the Army, Les continued his dedication to service by working for the Beauregard Parish Sheriff's Office, where he spent 18 years. Les was a proud patriot, deeply committed to his country. He was also an exceptional father and a loving grandfather who adored his family.
Les was a die-hard LSU fan, always cheering for his Tigers, but had a love-hate relationship with the New Orleans Saints, depending on how the game was going. Les was an avid hunter. He spent a majority of his spare time at the hunting lease. Les enjoyed sitting in the deer stand and being in solitude with nature. He also enjoyed taking his boat out fishing. He also loved tinkering in his shop, working on projects and keeping busy.
Les is survived by his devoted wife of 53 years, Merikay Morket; his two daughters, Christina Floyd (Jason) and Lisa Lantier (Randy); his grandsons, Nathan, Austin, and Gavin Floyd; and his future granddaughter-in-law, Natalie Richard.
A memorial service will be held in Les's honor on Friday, March 28, 2025, at 1:00 p.m. at Johnson Funeral Home in Moss Bluff, with a graveside service to follow at Beauregard Cemetery in DeRidder, Louisiana. Visitation will be open to the public starting at noon before the service.
