Lester Hunter, a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, veteran, and beloved member of the Muskogee community, passed away peacefully, leaving behind a legacy built on service, quiet strength, and deep love. Born on August 16, 1939, in Morris, Oklahoma, Lester was a man whose life reflected integrity, humility, and unwavering commitment to those around him.
After graduating from Central High School in 1957, Lester proudly enlisted in the United States Navy, where he served as a radarman aboard the U.S.S. Forrester, a destroyer escort. His three years of honorable service shaped his lifelong values of discipline, duty, and quiet courage.
Following his military service, Lester returned home and embarked on a successful 25-year career in newspaper advertising, where his creativity and dedication left a lasting mark. He later found great purpose working at the Veterans Affairs Hospital, where for 15 years he offered support and compassion to fellow veterans before retiring in 2002.
Lester made his home in Muskogee, where he was known and loved for his steady presence, warm heart, and dry wit. He believed in doing what was right, working hard without complaint, and showing up for those he loved. He lived his values every day, in both big and small ways.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Virginia and Lester Sr.; his sister, Jackie Mabe; and his beloved sons, Jay Keith and Michael Allan.
Lester is survived by his loving wife, Nancy; his son, Kirk and his wife Robin; and his daughter-in-law Jennifer Hunter – who he proudly called his daughters. He was a proud Papa to his grandson Dylan (and his wife, Esme), and a beloved Pops to his grandsons Ethan and Braxton. He was also blessed to meet and cherish his great grandson, Jaxon Michael, who brought a new joy and light. He is also survived by his sister, Margaret and her husband, L.D., as well as several beloved nieces and nephews, all of whom held a special place in his heart. Lester is also remembered with love by a host of extended family, friends, and all those fortunate enough to have known him.
Lester Hunter lived a life of quiet dignity and unwavering devotion. His legacy lives on in the generations he helped shape, in the values he upheld, and in the countless lives he touched through his kindness and strength. He will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
In his final months, Lester faced life's final chapter with the same grace that defined his days. Our family is deeply grateful to Enhabit Home Health and Hospice for their exceptional care, compassion, and respect. Their support allowed us to spend meaningful, peaceful time together, and we will forever hold their kindness in our hearts.
"Lester's greatest joy was his family. The love he gave will continue to live on in the hearts of those who called him husband, dad, Papa, Pops, and friend. His legacy is one of devotion, quiet strength, and an unwavering love that will never fade." To plant a beautiful memorial tree in memory of Lester, please visit our Tree Store.
