PERRY –
Lewis Martin Meeks, 91, passed away peacefully at home on Monday, July 7, 2025, with his devoted wife by his side. Graveside Services will be held on Saturday, July 12, 2025, at 10:00 a.m. in Evergreen Cemetery with the Reverend Bobby Nix and the Reverend Wayne Edwards officiating. In lieu of flowers, his memory would be honored through memorials to First Baptist Church of Perry, Jimmy Teresi Scholarship Fund, 1105 Main Street, Perry, GA 31069, or Christ's Sanctified Holy Church Home for the Aged, P. O. Box 1376, Perry, GA 31069, or Christ's Sanctified Holy Church Memorial Gardens Cemetery Legacy Fund, P. O. Box 1465, Perry, GA 31069.
Lewis was born on October 7, 1933, in Atlanta, Georgia, the son of the late Melvin Morgan Meeks, Sr., and the late Eva Sumner Meeks, and was a longtime resident of Perry, Georgia, since 1966. He was a graduate of Middle Tennessee State University and later earned a Master's Degree from Georgia State University. Following his military service in the U. S. Air Force during the Korean Conflict, Lewis worked in the banking business over fifty years. He was associated with the Bank of Perry for forty-four years as Vice-President, President, and Chairman of the Board of Directors. From 1983 to 1984 he served as President of the Community Bankers Association of Georgia. During his retirement years, he was associated with Christ's Sanctified Holy Church and Church Home for the Aged.
Lewis was an active member of First Baptist Church of Perry and the Dot Hardy Sunday School Class and through the years served in various capacities including Trustee, Deacon, Sunday School Teacher, and Usher while also serving on multiple church committees. His vast private and public community involvement included numerous businesses, civic clubs, government authorities, councils, and charitable organizations in Perry and Houston County. Notable among his community involvement include his tenure as President of Perry Area Chamber of Commerce in 1969 and his selection as the recipient of the Chamber's Seabie Hickson Community Service Award in 1988. His love of and participation in Perry's downtown revitalization efforts which began in 1974 are well-known and documented. He served as Chairman (1975-1984) of Perry Redevelopment Authority and subsequently as Chairman of the Downtown Development Authority of Perry. Mr. Meeks was honored to serve as Mayor of the City of Perry for two terms, from 1985 to 1988. When time permitted, he loved to read and express himself in inspirational writings.
Lewis was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Melvin M. Meeks, Jr.; and his sister, Elizabeth M. Schoonover.
A loving husband, father, grandfather, loyal friend, and devoted Christian, Lewis is survived by his loving wife of seventy years, June Norsworthy Meeks; three daughters, Deborah Eva Long (David), Lisa Maria Meeks, and Laura Lynn Carter (Lance); five grandchildren, Daniel Sumner Long, Andrew Lewis Long, Alek Zachariah Carter, Samuel Seth Carter, and Anna Camille Carter; several cousins, nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews.
