Lillian Chase Obituary
Lillian "Jill" Atwood Chase-loving wife and mother-passed away Saturday, July 6, 2024, at home in Marlborough, CT, surrounded by her family.
Born on July 10, 1945, to Lloyd and Josephine (Barker) Atwood of Provincetown, MA. Jill had an active upbringing in Provincetown; she enjoyed riding horses at Gale Force Stables, sailing at the West End Racing Club, collecting sea creatures, and caring for seals at the Provincetown Aquarium. She graduated from Provincetown High School in 1963 and went on to the University of Rhode Island, where she earned bachelor's degrees in education and biology. Jill later attended the University of Hartford and earned her master's degree in education. It was at URI where Jill met her future husband David S. Chase of Portsmouth, RI. They were married in 1968 in Provincetown MA and moved to Connecticut. They settled in Marlborough, CT where they have lived since 1971.
She taught Junior High School science in Glastonbury for 11 years and substituted for many years in Marlborough and Hebron. After leaving teaching, Jill used her time to pursue her wide-ranging interests.
Jill loved to collect cookbooks and make the recipes her own. She had a bit of a green thumb and worked with David to create amazing flowerbeds and vegetable gardens that she would pick from to cook an amazing meal to share with family and friends.
Jill was also an avid gamer, building a worldwide community that she regularly interacted with. She loved to listen to all the stories that people would share about their lives, but especially liked to talk with deployed service members who were gaming on their down time.
She volunteered at the Fidelco Guide Dog Foundation in Bloomfield, CT, fostering 14 dogs and providing a home for several dogs that were retired from service.
Jill also had an interest in sewing, which evolved into quilt-making. She found joy in discovering new fabric stores and art shows across the country. For 30 years she showed her work at craft and art shows throughout Connecticut, winning awards for her quilts at Danbury, Fairfield and Durham shows. One of her quilts was shown at the CT State Quilt Contest and another at the Eastern States Exposition in Massachusetts. Her quilts were admired for incorporating her remarkable sense of color with traditional patterns.
Throughout her life, Jill maintained her link to Provincetown and continued to retain the family home in the West End with her sister, Peggy. She enjoyed fishing, clamming, walking the flats and visiting shops, galleries, and restaurants.
Jill is survived by her husband, David S. Chase; her children, Shirley Kociu and her husband, Arben "Ben" Kociu of Manchester, CT, Jonathan Chase of Provincetown, MA who is currently caring for the Atwood home; her grandchildren, Lazo Kociu (attending Central CT State Univ.) and Emma Rose Kociu (attending Univ. of RI). Her sister, Margaret "Peggy" Atwood Naqi; and a niece, a nephew, and three great-nephews.
Jill's memorial arrangements will be private for the family and a burial ceremony will be held in Provincetown. Memorial donations in her honor may be made to the Marlborough Food Bank c/o Marlborough Town Hall, 26 North Main St., P.O. Box 29, Marlborough, CT 06447, or to the Roy B. Without a doubt, Jill was one of the finest quilters I ever knew. She had a great sense of color, style, and design. I was honored that she and I were able to work together on a quilt creation for me and a painting creation for her. The world will miss her extraordinary talents and her keen eye of the natural world. I will also miss her well-timed quiet smiles of shared respect and admiration. Jill, you will be in our hearts, always. Neighbor and friend, Donna Koropatkin and family
