Lois Irene Ferree April 24, 1932 – May 27, 2025
Lois Irene Ferree, 93, of Bloomington, Indiana, passed away peacefully on May 27, 2025. Born in Bloomington on April 24, 1932, Lois lived a life rooted in faith, strength, and devotion to her family.
Lois met her high school sweetheart, Herbert Joseph Ferree, through the Future Farmers of America. They were married in 1950, beginning a life together that spanned more than six decades. During their working years, they were often seen walking hand-in-hand around the Indiana University campus - a quiet testament to the enduring bond they shared. That same love carried them through marriage, parenting, and a lifetime of shared adventures.
In 1952, while her husband Herb was stationed with the U.S. Marine Corps in San Diego, Lois worked for a CPA as a bookkeeper - a position she loved. After returning to Indiana and raising her three children, she worked at Phi Delta Kappa International Headquarters.
Lois later worked for many years at the Indiana University Library Serial Department. She retired, leaving behind a legacy of commitment and quiet excellence.
A devoted Christian, Lois was a longtime and faithful member of the First Church of the Nazarene in Bloomington. Her deep belief in God shaped every part of her life and brought peace and strength to those around her. She and Herb were awarded a special lifetime achievement from the church as well.
Together, Herb and Lois shared a love for nature and outdoors. They enjoyed countless walks and hikes, especially in the Smoky Mountains and throughout the American West, where they found joy in the beauty of nature and each other's company.
Lois was known for her warm heart, her strong spirit, and her love of family. She was an exceptional cook and baker - her kitchen was always filled with the comforting scents of home-cooked meals and fresh-baked treats. She also had a lifelong love for baseball and especially enjoyed listening to Cincinnati Reds games on the radio.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Herbert Joseph Ferree; her parents, Cecil and Inez Silvers; her brother, Don Silvers; her sister, Christine Mitchell, and brother-in-law, Ben Mitchell; and her infant brother, Thomas Allen Silvers.
She is survived by her children: Larry Ferree (Donna Lentz), Pam Matthews (Fred), and Jeff Ferree (Terri); her grandchildren: Farra Ferree, Shea Ferree Carney (Ben), Sean Ferree, Jake Ferree, and Cole Ferree; and her great-grandchildren: Nolan Carney and Savannah Carney.
Lois will be remembered for her gentle spirit, unwavering faith, and love that was felt by all who knew her.
Special gratitude is given to her immediate family members who devoted extra time and care, allowing her to live comfortably at home until her passing.
Visitation will be held on Saturday, May 31, 2025, from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. at the First Church of the Nazarene in Bloomington, Indiana, with a service immediately following.
In lieu of flowers, the family welcomes donations in Lois's memory to the First Church of the Nazarene or a charity of your choice.
