Lon H Lund, 77, a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and visionary entrepreneur, passed away peacefully on February 20, 2026, at the Huntsman Cancer Institute, surrounded by the family he loved so dearly. After a courageous and successful battle against non-Hodgkin's lymphoma in 2024 and 2025, Lon ultimately succumbed to metastatic melanoma. He met every health challenge with the same tenacity and spirit that defined his entire life.
Lon was born on January 24, 1949, in
Salt Lake City, Utah, the youngest of three children to Herman Fredrick Lund and Beatrice Gill (lovingly known as Herm and Bea). His childhood was filled with adventure, where the great outdoors became his playground, surrounded by the laughter of cousins and friends. Days were infused with excitement, exploration, and the satisfaction of hard work, creating unforgettable memories that shaped his spirit.
When Lon was just 7 years old, his mom and dad sold all of their belongings and spent a year traveling around the world with their family. Lon's children loved hearing his stories of all the countries they visited and their adventures traveling across the oceans on ships for weeks at a time. One of Bea's journal entries from January 1, 1956, read, "Off the coast of Fiji in the Pacific…have you ever read of a cyclone? Well, this day we were experiencing just that…Bea in bed, Gill, Loa, and Lon having a great time. Riding suitcases as the ship tipped…I could hear everything coming down and could see waves engulf the ship. Soon, three beaming children would come down from the dining room to say, 'Ah! Mother, that big one nearly turned us upside down, I hope it comes again!"
Herm put Lon and Gill to work as teenagers, building the family cabin. Their hard work paid off by creating a place where the family gathered for many years. The time spent and memories made at the cabin are cherished by all. From the family dinners and elaborate breakfasts, nighttime ghost stories, playing with cousins, the death-defying bridge across the river, mattress swings, the smell of Herm's tack room, riding horses, long walks, visiting on the front porch swing, and so much more, Lon took great pride in the cabin and loved spending time there with his family.
Lon graduated from Highland High School in 1967. He proudly served his country by joining the Air National Guard right after high school, as it was a time when young men were getting drafted for the Vietnam War. He attended basic training in Texas and earned his pilot's license. He later attended the University of Utah.
Lon's life was defined by service and a relentless work ethic. He served a faithful mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Australia from 1970 to 1972. An entrepreneur at heart, Lon possessed the rare ability to turn ideas into reality. His professional legacy spans numerous industries, including construction, property management, landscaping, and security. His adventurous spirit even led him to launch a helicopter business, proving that for Lon, the sky was truly the limit.
Lon married Jennifer Davis in 1972. Together, they had three children, Andy, Lindsay, and Alex. They were later divorced. In 1985, he married Karen Ulm, with whom he added two more children, Cody and Kasie. They were also later divorced. More recently, he married Gina Winfree in 2019. In the short time they were married, Lon and Gina enjoyed traveling to many places, including Australia, Switzerland, Germany, Austria, Hungary, Italy, Paris, and many states in the US. Lon's children are grateful to Gina for the love and companionship she provided Dad for the last six years of his life. Especially the last few years, when Gina cared for him through several health challenges.
Above all his professional achievements, Lon's greatest pride was his family. He loved his children and grandchildren more than anything. One of his favorite things to do was to visit his grandkids and watch their ball games, or other performances, which was always followed by cheeseburgers and milkshakes for everyone.
He is survived by his wife, Gina Lund; his brother, Gill (Mary Lu) Lund; and his sister, Loa (Bravant) Haslam. He leaves behind a legacy of hard work and love through his five children: Andy (Priscila) Lund, Lindsay (Dan) Garr, Alex (Charidee) Lund, Cody (Kayla) Lund, and Kasie (Mike) Dana. Lon's joy was multiplied by his 13 beautiful grandchildren: Porter, Owen, McKenlee, Brynlee, Jaydin, Ainslee, Hadley, Preslee, Brody, Blakely, Saydee, Tanner, and Jaxton, who will miss their grandpa's strength and guidance. He was preceded in death by his parents, Herman (2006) and Beatrice (1994).
When Lon met and married Gina, he enthusiastically took on the role of grandpa and supporter to Gina's children and grandchildren. He also gained a new audience for his dad jokes. His favorite was when he would point to a cemetery and tell you to look over there (we always looked), and he would say, "People are just dying to get in there!" Well, Dad, look over there… Gina's children and grandchildren quickly grew to love Lon and enjoyed spending time with him. Gina's children include: Christiana Baird, Andrew (Nora Pirsch) Baird, Megan (Thomas) Hainline, and CaseyAnne (José) Barandiaran, and grandchildren: Kaylynn, Ariyana, Mabel, Maddox, Avery, Lucy, Navy, Ana Sophia, Emily, and Mary.
We wish to extend our deepest gratitude to the doctors and nurses who provided such compassionate care to Lon during his health battles, especially the care team at Huntsman Cancer Institute during the last week of his life, and to the many friends and neighbors who supported him throughout his life.
