Dr. Lorraine Maclean O'Conor, born, in Waterbury, Connecticut, died unexpectedly and peacefully at her home on March 11, 2025, in Castle Hayne, North Carolina, just one day shy of her 78th birthday.
A woman of profound intellect and compassion, Lorraine dedicated her life to the pursuit of knowledge, the care of her patients, and the joy of her family.
Her academic journey was marked by notable achievements; she earned a Master of Arts in Theoretical Physical Chemistry at Brandeis University, a Master of Arts in Teaching from Harvard University, and an MD from Georgetown University. She was board certified in internal medicine, addiction medicine, and psychiatry, earning the Behavior Therapy Award from Temple University, a testament to her dedication and expertise in her field.
Dr. O'Conor led a rich and varied life, living in six states and Washington D.C., and practicing medicine with unwavering dedication until the fall of 2024. Her interests outside of work included gardening, interior decorating, sewing, reading, and cooking, where she found solace and joy in the simplicity of everyday pleasures.
Above all, Lorraine considered her greatest accomplishment to be raising her two children as a single parent. Her daughter, Catherine Adams, and her son, Christopher O'Conor, both followed in her footsteps, achieving the title of MD PhD, a legacy she cherished deeply. An adoring grandmother, she delighted in spoiling her grandchildren-Benjamin, Caden, and Cameron-with pastries, Legos, and enthusiastic support for their favorite football and basketball teams. Her beloved Havanese, Lexi, was a constant companion who will miss her dearly.
Preceded in death by her parents, George Donald Maclean and Stephanie Lucille Petraitis Maclean, Lorraine leaves behind her cherished family: her children and their spouses, Catherine and Justin Benincasa, Christopher and Melody O'Conor, and her beloved grandchildren.
A celebration of her life will be held in New York at a future date.
