Lucia Ruth Mitchell, 93, passed away peacefully on September 28, 2025, in Charlotte, North Carolina.

Born on November 16, 1931, in St. Louis, Missouri, Lucia lived a vibrant and adventurous life. Her journey took her from the heart of the Midwest to the bustling streets of New York City, where she pursued her passion for art in college. Over the years, she made her home in Pennsylvania, Brazil, Connecticut, and New Mexico before eventually settling in Charlotte to be near her family.

Lucia is survived by her beloved son, Roy Lawrence Castillo, and daughter-in-law, Theresa Lynn Castillo, of Waxhaw, NC; as well as her cherished granddaughter, Lydia Castillo Arpino, and her husband, Nicholas Arpino, of North Haven, CT.

A woman of warmth, kindness, and infectious cheer, Lucia made friends wherever she went. She especially treasured her community at Sardis Presbyterian Church, where she found joy, fellowship, and a lively circle of Quiddler buddies. Even as age gently slowed her, Lucia's joyful spirit, gentle nature, and ever-present smile remained undimmed.

Her legacy is one of love, resilience, creativity, and quiet strength - remembered fondly by all who had the good fortune to know her.

A celebration of her life will be held on Friday, October 24th at 12:00 PM at Sardis Presbyterian Church, 6100 Sardis Rd, Charlotte, NC 28270. All who knew her are welcome to attend and honor her memory.

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made in Lucia's name to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, an organization she deeply admired.

Arrangements are in the care of Kenneth W. Poe Funeral & Cremation Service, 1321 Berkeley Ave., Charlotte, NC 28204; (704) 641-7606. Online condolences may be shared at www.kennethpoeservices.com.
