Lucy E. “Laura” Johnson, 105, of New Philadelphia, died Sunday, December 22, 2024.
A daughter of the late Boleslaw and Alexandria (Milewski) Adamowicz, Lucy was born on October 26, 1919 in New Britain, Connecticut.
Prior to World War II, Laura enlisted in the U.S. Army Nursing Corps. Lt. Laura served her country honorably. For most of the war she served overseas in North Africa. She met her future husband, bomber pilot Danny D. Johnson, at Stewart Field in New York where he served as a flight instructor. They married on October 27, 1945.
Lucy was a longtime member of New Philadelphia Sacred Heart Church and a life member of both the Midvale and New Philadelphia Posts of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. On the stroke of midnight on the day females were finally eligible, Lucy became the first official female member of the VFW.
Laura is survived by her children, Michael C. (Joan) of New Philadelphia, David E. (Nancy) of New Philadelphia and Mark E. (Brenda) of Sugarcreek; daughter-in-law, Sherry Johnson of New Philadelphia; grandchildren, Heather Johnson, Abbey (David) Tebbe, Doug (Katie) Johnson of Columbus, Michael (Sara) Johnson, Todd Johnson, David Johnson, Maggie (Kevin) Posey of New Philadelphia, Beth (John) Dirk of Yuma AZ, Jeremiah Johnson of Sugarcreek, and Justin (Heather) Johnson of Atwood Lake; fourteen great-grandchildren and her brother and sister-in-law, Henry and Sondra Adamowicz of Auburndale, Florida, and sister-in-law Lori Adamowicz of Cromwell, CT.
Lucy was preceded in passing by her parents; her husband, Danny, in 1998; her children, Danny Johnson, Jr. and Susan G. Johnson; seven brothers and two sisters.
Visitation will be held on Monday, December 30, 2024 from 12 to 2 PM in the Linn-Hert-Geib Funeral Home at New Philadelphia where a service will begin at 2 PM with Father Jeff Coning officiating. A private inurnment will be held at a later date in Evergreen Burial Park where the New Philadelphia VFW #1445 will render military honors.
The family requests that memorial contributions may be made in Lucy’s memory to Sacred Heart Church, 139 Third Street NE, New Philadelphia, Ohio 44663.
