M/Sgt Johnnie Morgan Black, 87, of Bossier City, Louisiana, died peacefully in his sleep at home, Sunday morning April 21, 2024.
Daddy was born at home on November 18, 1936, in Hazel, Kentucky to Carlos Clayton Black and Opal Belle Vick Black. Daddy was the second child of five.
Our daddy loved adventures mixed with mischief. His childhood was full of hunting squirrels, plowing fields, fishing, teasing his three sisters, and fist fighting with his brother. Daddy loved his family dearly.
That longing for adventure led him to a 20-year career in the USAF. Daddy joined the USAF at 17 years of age. Our daddy was loyal and proud of our beautiful country. A proud veteran who traveled to four continents and endured yearlong deployments in SE Asia, Guam, and Libya Africa. Daddy was on high alert during the Bay of Pigs. In 1974, daddy retired honorably after 20 years of service. Our family made our home in Bossier City, Louisiana.
Daddy then worked for the US Postal Service. This job did not require deployments, so fishing, playing cards, watching the Dallas Cowboys get beat, and of course family were his great pleasures.
Johnnie married his British bride, Gillian Margaret Walker, in England and they had three daughters, Judy, Carol and Mary. To call him a great "girl dad," would be accurate. He was our hero and loved us well. We have always known that our daddy would be there for us. Our mother died in 1989.
Johnnie then married Opal Dickie Davis. The following years were full of travel, winters in Florida, living on Caddo Lake and fishing. Unfortunately, Opal died in 2004.
As chance would have it, daddy was introduced to a lovely blonde named Wanda. They had both been widowed twice and understood each other. They married and began traveling, trips to the casino, family gatherings, and basketball! Holding hands was the norm for Daddy and Wanda.
Our daddy was loyal, funny, generous, and a great example of a man. He loved it with his whole heart. We know how much this country meant to him and he was an immensely proud veteran to the end. We will miss his birthday morning phone calls singing happy birthday to us all! He always had to be the first one to call.
Hold your loved ones tight and enjoy each day. In the end, that is what is most important.
Johnnie was preceded in death by his parents, Carlos C. Black, Opal (Vick) Black, brother, Carlos Black, Jr., sister-in-law, Glenda Black, brother-in-law, Johnny Williams, brother-in-law, Bob Howorka, wife Gillian Margaret Walker Black, wife Opal Davis Black, daughter, Carol Ann Black O'Brien, son-in-law, Miles Leo O'Brien.
He is survived by his loving wife, Wanda Browder Black, daughters, Judy (Alan) Black-Schmidt, Mary (Joe) Black Brown, sisters, Allison Howorka, Peggy Williams, and Kay Black. Grandchildren: Aaron Black-Schmidt, Kelsey (Kyle) Walter, Michelle (Brent) Pounders, Jessica (Dustin) Wallace, Joseph (Natalie) Brown, Samuel (Savannah) Brown, Gillian (Justin) Hawkins, Eighteen great grands, one great-great grand and many nieces and nephews.
A Memorial Service will be held in honor of Johnnie on Monday, April 29, 2024, promptly at 10:30 A.M. at Northwest Louisiana Veterans Cemetery, 7970 Mike Clark Road Keithville, Louisiana 71047. The family would like to thank Willis Knighton Hospice of Bossier for their care and thoughtful treatment of our father, especially Jackie Martin, Lucy (Hospice RN), Mary Hall (Sitter); Aulds Funeral Home and NW Louisiana Veterans Cemetery.
