Margaret Nannie Epps Darlington, 96, a lifelong resident of Washington, D.C. was called home to be with Our Lord on Sunday, December 31, 2023, at George Washington University Hospital in Washington, D.C.
Nannie, as she was called by family and friends, was born at Columbia Hospital on August 25, 1927; the fourth of six amazing children (John, Joseph "Joe", Iomie "Omie", Catherine and Sarah preceded Nannie in death) born to the late Lucius and Olivia Martina Epps.
Nannie had a very memorable childhood growing up in the close-knit neighborhood of Georgetown. She was educated in the District of Columbia Public School System attending Stevens Elementary, Francis Junior High and graduating from Cardozo High School (old Cardozo); she was a member of Epiphany Catholic Church.
On October 1, 1948, Nannie married her friend and love of her life James Eugene Darlington, Jr. at Saint Augustine Catholic Church. Together they raised seven loving and devoted children: Barbara, James, Jerome, Janice, John, Jean and Jerold (deceased).
Nannie was a faithful and devoted member of Holy Comforter-St. Cyprian Catholic Church. Before her illness, nothing stopped her from attending mass. She was also active in the St. Augustine Auxiliary #84 and St Thomas Ladies Auxiliary #64
In 2001, after 33 years of service at the Pentagon and Navy Annex, Nannie retired from the Department of Defense.
Nannie's first love was her family and cooking Sunday dinners for them or anyone who happened to stop by. This gave her great joy. She treasured trips with her sister, Catherine (deceased), and daughter, Janice, to Atlantic City, Martha's Vineyard, Upstate New York and several Canadian provinces
She also loved walking and your company was welcomed but you had better be prepared to run in order to keep up with her. She had nonstop energy, always busy, busy, busy...but she enjoyed sitting and chatting with family and friends.
Nannie was a tower of strength for her family. There was nothing she wouldn't do for them. She gave them her unconditional support and love. She also took great pride in the accomplishments of each member of her family, immediate and extended.
All who knew Nannie remember her giving nature, her kindness and her gift of love
Nannie was preceded in death by her loving husband of 34 years, James E. Darlington, Jr; son, Jerold K. Darlington; granddaughter, Silecia D. Darlington; grandsons, James Reed, Jr, Keith Craven, William "Smitty" Smith, Jr, Darnell Peoples, and Darve'll Darlington.
Nannie leaves behind her beloved children, Barbara Scott, James Darlington, III (Lisa), Jerome Darlington (Demetra), Janice Williams (Frank, Sr), John Darlington, and Jean Darlington; grandchildren, Bonita Thomas, Frank Williams, Jr, Michael Williams, Darnell Darlington, Darnte` Darlington, and Jennifer Darlington, who will forever cherish her memory; adored great grandchildren, Bria Thomas, Tierra Armstrong, Malik Thomas, Ryan Smith, Kyrie Tinsley, A'Nya Giles, Darnell Darlington, Jr, Diesel Darlington, Ayden Lovelace, Aris Lovelace, Jeremiah Williams, Monique Williams, and Payton Williams; and loving great-great granddaughter, Khloe Thomas; supportive daughter-in-law, Patrice Darlington, a host of devoted and loving nieces and nephews (who all think they are her favorite), a host of other family members and friends
