Margaret A. Matthews, 78, of Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania, passed away on October 8, 2025, at the Center for Hope in Scotch Plains, New Jersey, surrounded by her family.
One of 10 children born to John and Peggy–Jo Matthews, Marge grew up in South Orange, New Jersey. She attended East Orange Catholic High School. She graduated from Chestnut Hill College with a B.S Degree in Chemistry and received an M.S. Degree in Chemistry from Saint Joseph's University. Upon graduation from college, Marge started her career at The Institute for Scientific Information, now known as Thomson Scientific, where she spent most of her career. She retired in 2014 as a Senior Chemical Information Specialist. She also worked at Netbridge Technologies Inc. and the University of Pennsylvania as an Assistant to the Managing Editor of Organic Letters.
Marge was an active member of the American Chemical Society, both on a national level and with its Philadelphia Chapter. She received many awards during her career, including a Salute to Excellence from the Philadelphia Chapter and a Meritorious Service Award from the ACS Division of Chemical Information.
Marge had many hobbies, including reading and traveling. Over the years she made many trips with a number of her family members and with friends she made over the years. She was especially close to her many nieces and nephews.
Marge is survived by her sister Marian (Damian Power), by four brothers, Joe (Maria), Ed (Marge), Jim (Judi) and Tom (Maureen) and a sister-in-law, MaryEllen Matthews. She is also survived by 24 nieces and nephews and 50 grand nieces and nephews. Marge always enjoyed spending time with her extended family, particularly at the Matthews Family Reunions and the semi-annual "siblings" dinners. Marge was the one who always remembered to wear her sibling's T-shirt. She always amazed everyone at family gatherings with her total recall of prior events and dates. She knew the birthdates of all her nieces and nephews and most of her grand nieces and nephews.
Marge was pre-deceased by her sisters, Jane Marie and Patricia, by her brothers, John and Brian and by two sisters-in-law, Joanne and Judy.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Marge's memory may be made to the Center for Hope, 1900 Raritan Road, Scotch Plains, NJ 07076.
