Fitzgerald Funeral Home & Crematory LTD - Mulford ChapelMargery Mae “Marty” Gioppo, 92, of Machesney Park, IL, passed away on Friday, October 3, 2025, with loving family by her side.
Marty was born April 19, 1933, in Freeport, IL, the daughter of Roy and Emma (Eder) Phillips. She graduated from Freeport High School and went on to work as a cashier at Washington Junior High and Jefferson High School. Marty was dedicated to her faith and a longtime member of St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church in Rockford. She married Peter A. Gioppo on January 6, 1951. Marty cherished spending many years with her husband at Roy Gayle Park where he was actively involved in coaching baseball. She was an avid fan of the Chicago Cubs. Marty enjoyed traveling and spending time with her family any time they could all be together. She was very proud of all her grandchildren’s accomplishments as she regularly attended their special events and sports games. Marty will be dearly missed.
Those left to honor her memory include her husband, Peter; children, Michael (Nancy) Gioppo of Rockford, Dan Gioppo of Roscoe, Cathy (Pat) Molander of Cherry Valley and Patty (John) Armstrong of Rockford; sister, Levon Elliott of Oregon, IL; 9 grandchildren, Lisa Gioppo, Scott Gioppo, Andrea (Joe) Angileri, Pete Gioppo, Tom Molander, Michelle Raia Gioppo, Amy (Vittorio) Calandrella, Amanda (Nick) Nundahl and Megan Armstrong; 12 great-grandchildren, Dominic Angileri, J.J. Angileri, Anthony Angileri, Maria Angileri, Isabella, Ava and Sam Gioppo, Maia and Michael Burkett, Enzo and Luca Calandrella and Vincent Nundahl. Marty is predeceased by her parents; daughter-in-law, Pamila Gioppo; sisters, Norma Winters, Vivian Ashley and her brother, Marvin Phillips.
The family would like to give a special thank you to the staff of Mo-Cara Hospice for their kindness and care given to Marty.
A Funeral Mass will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, October 13, 2025, at St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church, 1010 Ferguson St. Rockford, IL 61102. Visitation will be from 9:00 a.m. until the time of Mass. Memorials may be made in Marty’s name to the Gioppo family to be established later.
