She is preceded in death and welcomed into heaven by her late husband James Flory and her five siblings, Esperanza Garnica, Molly Castillon, Yolanda Anderson, Julia Schmidt, and Frank Garnica.
Maria graduated from Chesaning Union High School In 1949. She attended St. Mary's school of nursing in Saginaw, graduating and becoming an RN in 1954. On May 1, 1952, she married the love of her life James Flory. Maria stayed home for 10 years raising their 6 children, then she worked at Henry ford Hospital for 9 years as a float nurse, discharge planner, and utilization reviewer. Maria enjoyed summers at the A-frame cabin with her family. She started her college education at Oakland University part time while working at Henry Ford Hospital. Maria and Jim moved to Higgins Lake in 1972, where she worked as a supervisor of the utilization review department at Tolfree Memorial Hospital in West Branch, MI. During this time, she furthered her education at Kirtland, Harrison, and Delta Community Colleges. Maria then took a leave of absence from Tolfree Hospital and moved to Sault Ste Marie University for 1 year with Jim to complete her Bachelor of Science Nursing (BSN) in 1983, after which she worked for Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Michigan as auditor in Health Care for 6 years.
Maria and Jim moved to Crossville, TN where they lived for 13 years. During their time in Crossville the couple traveled to Europe and Mexico and wintered in Queen Creek, AZ. In Arizona Maria volunteered utilizing her BSN at Queen Creek Migrant Health Care clinic for 13 years. She received an award for her dedication and medical knowledge. Bilingual interpreting came in very handy with many of the clients. The Flory's moved back to Chesaning in 2008. Maria enjoyed walking, making quilts for children and grandchildren, reading, collecting angels, and playing cards with family and friends.
She loved taking care of her seven grandchildren and enjoyed her five great grandchildren. Maria is survived by her children, daughters; Candelaria Flory - Barnes CA, Christine (Dan) VanHusan of Dowagiac MI: Sons, Anthony Flory of Chesaning, Laurence (Tia) Flory of West Bloomfield, Pierre Flory, Timothy Flory of Roscommon, grandchildren; Dr. Charles (Julie) VanHusan, Brian VanHusan, Amanda VanHusan (Rudy Rosales), David (Kellie) Flory, Brittany Flory, (Chris Brown), Matthew Flory, Kayla Flory, great grandchildren; Savannah, Jackson, Sullivan Flory, Benicio (Beni), Arturo (Artie) Rosales, Ryan, Jack and Lauren Collins, sisters; Helen Czeiszperger, Ana Rosa McCollum, and Lisa Young as well as several special aunts, nieces, nephews and cousins.
A funeral mass will be held on August 31, 2024 at St. Peter Catholic Church in Chesaning, 404 S. Wood Street,
Chesaning, MI 48616, at 12pm. The family will receive friends from 11am till the time of service.
