Marilyn Sue Whittington, beloved daughter, sister, wife, mother, Nana, and friend to many, returned to her heavenly home on July 16, 2025, after a valiant battle with ALS. She was welcomed into a joyous reunion with many loved ones who preceded her in death.
Marilyn was born on August 18, 1958, in Ogden, Utah, to Ronald and Joyce Fisher, the sixth of seven children. She spent her childhood camping with family, learning to love the Lord, and developing lifelong passions for sports and music. As a teenager, she competed in fast-pitch softball, winning a state championship and traveling to nationals. She also loved to sing-an enthusiasm that stayed with her throughout her life-and became an accomplished vocalist and pianist.
Marilyn chose to serve a proselyting mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, spending 18 months in Alabama. She attended Weber State College and later graduated from Brigham Young University with a degree in Physical Education and a minor in Math. Though her degree was not in music, her rich musical background led her to be hired as a choir teacher at two high schools in Sevier County, Utah.
While living in Richfield, Utah, Marilyn met and married Charles Allen Whittington. They soon began their family and were blessed with four children: Connor (Michelle), Kaydee (Tyler Hall), Jaron (Jamie), and Jeffery (Maria). With their family complete, they moved to Naperville, Illinois, in 1998, where Marilyn lived until her passing. Teaching was one of Marilyn's great passions. Over the years, she taught many beloved piano students, each of whom she cared for deeply. She also loved tennis, biking, hiking, and living a healthy lifestyle. Her life was defined by service - to her family, her students, her community, and most of all, to the Lord. She was constantly on the Lord's errand, quietly blessing the lives of all around her in ways too numerous to count.
In her final years, Marilyn courageously battled ALS, remaining active, faithful, and
loving to the very end.
She is survived by her husband Chuck; her children and grandchildren; her brothers Jerry, Stan, and Roger; and her sister Karen. She was preceded in death by her parents and by her sisters Colleen and Janalyn-both of whom also passed away from ALS.
