Mark Handrahan

August 7, 1953 - December 3, 2025

Handrahan, Mark (BPD Ret.) of South Boston, MA passed away peacefully at home at age 72 in the company of his loving wife Jane, his beloved dog Mina, and loved ones on December 3, 2025, after a courageous battle with cancer. He was the beloved, adored husband and best friend of Jane Hayes Handrahan. Mark was a loyal and loving father to his daughters Elizabeth Handrahan and her partner Michael Murray of West Roxbury, MA and Janine Dunn and her husband Christopher of Foxboro, MA. He was the loving Grandpa to his precious grandchildren, Michael, and Sean Murray, and Caiden and Avery Dunn. He was pre-deceased by his parents Katherine and Cornelius Handrahan and his brothers, Neil, John and Paul. Mark was the cherished and devoted son-in-law to the late Margaret (Pegge) Hayes who simply worshipped the ground Mark walked on.

Mark was a Sergeant Detective of the BPD retiring after a 36-year career. He started in D-4, then spent much of his time in District B-2, as well as the Drug Unit. Mark was the recipient of many awards and citations while serving in the BPD including the BPD Medal of Honor and the Boston Police Relief Association Memorial Award. Mark is the past President of the Boston Police Runner's Club. Prior to working for the BPD, Mark served honorably in the U.S. Army in the 1st Cavalry Division and was a very proud patriot and supporter of all Veterans' causes. Mark loved to walk around Castle Island and was an avid cyclist. He often rode for charities near and dear to his heart, most especially for the Tour De Force. Mark ran 5 Boston marathons and participated in at least 10 triathlons after the age of 60. Mark loved to travel to his second home in Acapulco, Mexico and more recently he ventured to many other beautiful destinations around the world with his loving wife Jane and their best friend, Erin Atwood. One of Mark's favorite trips was to St. Lucia with his entire family. Mark was a long-time member of the Boston Harbor Yacht Club. He was a great, generous, caring person who will be missed by all who knew and loved him.

Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend visiting hours at the O'Brien Funeral Home at 146 Dorchester Street, South Boston, MA on Monday, December 8th, 2025 from 5:00pm - 8:00pm. Funeral Mass will be held at St. Brigid's Church in South Boston at 11:00 am on Tuesday, December 9th, 2025.
