In Loving Memory of Mark Stephen Sauber (1955 - 2025)
It is with heavy hearts yet joyful remembrances that we announce the passing of Mark Stephen Sauber, lovingly known to many as Tater, Superfan, Meat Dude, Uncle Marky Head, and Santa, who peacefully left this world at his residence in
Hanover, Michigan, on May 24th, 2025, at the age of 70.
Mark Sauber's life was a tapestry woven with the vibrant threads of community, friendship, and unwavering spirit. Born and raised in Moscow, Michigan, he graduated from Jonesville High School, where he made his mark both on and off the field as an all-conference left-handed pitcher for the Jonesville Comets. His love for baseball carried him through decades of men's softball, earning him the affectionate nickname "Tater", a testament to his ability to hit life's challenges out of the park.
Mark was a staple in the Hanover-Horton community, operating his own business, Sauber Excavating, and working diligently as a store clerk at the Hanover Market, where countless locals came to know his infectious laughter and quick-witted humor. He had a gift for turning strangers into friends, often gifting them with playful nicknames that reflected the unique bond he forged with each person. His next-door neighbor beautifully captured Mark's generous spirit, remarking, "The community lost their sports broadcaster, a firework provider, and a dedicated Comets fan, but the kids and I lost a bonus grandpa and dad." Mark's legacy is defined in his achievements and the countless lives he touched. He was a steadfast friend, a supportive neighbor, and a beloved figure whose kindness resonated deeply within the hearts of those who knew him. Evening dinner cookouts, late-night conversations, and spontaneous adventures became cherished moments that will forever live on in the memories of his friends and family.
Mark is survived by his loving mother, Shirley Lou Sauber, and a vibrant family that includes his siblings: Colleen Carpenter (Fred Carpenter), Steve Sauber (Debbie Sauber), Britt Sauber, Kevin Sauber (Christina Sauber), Morgan Sauber, Shanna Wood (Kevin Wood), and Jaime Hendershott (Mick Hendershott), along with a multitude of cherished nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, and cousins-an extraordinary clan that would take an entire Sunday newspaper to name. While he is preceded in death by his father, James Edward Sauber, and his brother, Aaron Sauber (Sandy Sauber), Mark's legacy of love, laughter, and kindness will forever remain in the hearts of his family and friends.
A celebration of Mark's life will be on June 14th at 2:00 p.m. at the Hanover-Horton High School Gym and open to all who wish to honor his memory. Family, friends, and all who knew Mark are invited to join in remembering a true community treasure. As we bid farewell to Mark, let us carry forward his spirit of kindness, enthusiasm, and love. We find solace in knowing that he now watches over us, bringing joy to the heavens and remembering always leaving jelly out for his beloved birds. You are so loved and deeply missed, Marky.
Thank you for being a bright light in our lives. Your memory will be cherished forever..
