It is with heavy hearts that we announce our beloved husband, son, brother and friend, Mark Waschak, departed this life on June 27, 2025. He was 61 years old.
He was born on Friday, the 13th (his lucky day), in 1963 in Lorain, OH and the family moved to Pittsburgh, PA when he was a young boy. Mark and his family settled in Conyers, GA in 1974 where he attended Honey Creek Elementary and Heritage High School in Rockdale County. As an avid sportsman, he played soccer and was recruited for the high school football team but found his true passion in AJGA golf.
Mark received his Bachelor of Science and Master of Science degrees in Textiles from the Georgia Institute of Technology and served as a Safety Engineer and Compliance Officer for the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and as a Site Representative for the U.S. Department of Energy, Fernald Field Office, where he oversaw all aspects of their environmental, safety and health program. He later served as Safety Director for a Fortune 500 company and worked with major workers' compensation carriers.
He entered law school and graduated in 1992 from Georgia State University College of Law, gaining admission to the State Bar of Georgia the same year. His engineering, government, and business experience meshed seamlessly with his legal career, rendering him an indispensable "one-stop shop" to clients because he could communicate with line supervisors, government inspectors, company safety directors, and lawyers from the solicitor's office with equal ease and effectiveness. Following several years in private practice at his firm known as "OHSA Busters" in Conyers, GA, Mark joined Wimberly Lawson Steckel Schneider & Stine as Of Counsel in 1999.
In addition to his law practice, Mark was frequently recruited as a speaker by trade associations on topics ranging from OSHA compliance to loss control strategy. He was a guest lecturer at Georgia Tech and, with his colleagues Larry Stine and Betsy Dorminey, co-authored a treatise entitled Occupational Safety and Health Law, Compliance and Practice, published and updated annually by Thomson/Reuters and available electronically through the major legal research sites.
There was nothing Mark valued more than loving and being loved by his family and friends. He made the kind of lifelong friendships that most people would envy, and these friendships stood the test of time. His close friends became like brothers to him, including, but not limited to, Tom Golden, Wayne Newman, Mark Conder, and Larry Stine. Mark's life took him down many roads which led him back to his first love, Mary. Their love for each other never faded, even after being apart for 32 years. Once they reconnected, they were inseparable and finally married in 2024. Their lives were full and included their 2 fur babies, Cody and Moose. Mark's passion for sports included his beloved Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets, the world-renowned Pittsburgh Steelers and the Atlanta Braves. He enjoyed sharing the ups and downs of all the games with his mom and dad. After marrying Mary, who was a graduate of the University of Georgia, he gained an appreciation for the success of the Dawgs.
Mark is preceded in death by his father, Martin Waschak. He is survived by his wife, Mary; his mother, Patricia Waschak; his brothers, Michael Waschak and Marty Waschak (wife Lisa); his sister, Michelle Waschak (husband Cecil Wilhoit III); his uncle, Mickey Joy; his aunt, Barbara Waschak; his nieces, Amanda (husband James Kauffmann) and Lauren Brooke (fiancé Josh Sargent); his cousin, Diana Gasser (husband Roger); Mary's children, Mary Catherine Schival and Sam Schival; and extended family in OH and WA.
A memorial mass will be held on Wednesday, July 9th, at 12:00pm at Good Shepherd Catholic Church, 3740 Holtzclaw Road, Cumming, GA 30041. The family will receive visitors beginning at 11:00am. For those unable to attend, the service will also be Livestreamed on the church's website www.gsrcc.net.
