She was preceded in death by her parents, George Wiley Waters and Rachel Wynn Waters; her loving husband of 63 years, Donald Cyril Varney; and her brother, Wiley Dimpsey Waters.

She is survived by her three children, April Varney Goodwyn (Charles) of Virginia Beach, VA, Daryl Martin Varney (Sherrie) of Sims, NC, and Donna Varney Creef (Jerry) of Colington NC; her four grandchildren, Anne, Adam, Kaylee, and Brady; four great-grandchildren, Griffin, Lillian, Boone, and Hattie Grace; her sister, Georgia McCollom (Carl) of Asheboro, NC; and her brother, Dalton (Eliza) Waters of Williamston, NC, as well as a host of nieces and nephews.

Upon graduation from Robersonville High School in May 1954, Janice moved to Portsmouth, VA, then to Washington DC. In Washington, DC, she met her future husband, Army Specialist Don Varney, who was stationed by Fort Belvoir, VA. They married on November 28, 1957. After living in Illinois for several years, they returned to North Carolina in 1969 and settled in Bear Grass, NC. Upon Don's passing in 2020, Janice relocated to live with her daughter in Colington, NC.

Janice enjoyed needlework, gardening, and spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren until her passing.

The family wishes to express their sincere appreciation to the staff at The Cottage at Spring Arbor in Kill Devil Hills and at Adoration Hospice of Nags Head, who took exceptional care of her.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Colington United Methodist Church at P.O. Box 3425, Kill Devil Hills, NC 27948.
