Marvin Dewayne Sumners

Marvin Dewayne Sumners, age 90, beloved husband, father, Pawpaw, and friend, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on December 29, 2024.
Marvin was born to Colbert Sumners and Nancy Sumners (née Hall) in Marshall County, Alabama, where he spent his formative years. During high school, the family moved to Corpus Christi, TX, where he graduated from W.B. Ray High School.
Shortly after high school, Marvin joined the military, proudly serving his country in the United States Air Force. Marvin honed his craft as an aircraft technician, which took him all over the world, including Vietnam, Guam, New Zealand, Spain, and Saudi Arabia. He made many friends through his travels and always made time to crack jokes, pull pranks, and find ways to make people smile. He retired from the military after 30+ years of service.
Softball was a cornerstone of Marvin's life. He played with his church team for many years, taking it upon himself to recruit players and make sure they found God in the process. He also played while in the Air Force, and even in his retirement, enjoyed the game on a 60+ league. When he wasn't focused on softball, he was rooting for his favorite team, the Alabama Crimson Tide. Marvin was invested in Alabama's team, with Bear Bryant as a personal hero, and a highlight of his Alabama fandom was being able to watch a game from a VIP suite at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium.
Above all, Marvin was a family man and a man of God. His devotion to God was apparent in every aspect of his life, and he was generous with his prayers for others. His family will dearly miss hearing him deliver the most beautiful, heart-felt prayers. Marvin was a doting husband, and loved his wife more than anything. Even in his last days, he made sure to tell Fay, "I just can't get enough of you." He was giving with his time and energy, always ready to jump in to lend a hand. His faithfulness, devotion, and love are beacons of light in our hearts.
Marvin is preceded in death by his parents; and brother, Billy Sumners.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 66 years, Fay Dean Sumners of Austell; children, Christi Scarbro (Michael) of Dallas, and Rhonda Brady of Mableton; grandchildren, Holli Chinapoo (Brenton), Halley Baker (Roger), Benjamin Brady (Jamyya), Matthew Brady (Jessica Anderson), and Andrew Brady (Kimberly); nine great-grandchildren; and a host of beloved extended family and friends.
The family will hold private services honoring Marvin's life and legacy.
