Mary (Pinkosz) Gabrys of Bayonne, NJ, had almost completed her 100th trip around the sun when she died suddenly on December 23, 2023, at Ocean Medical Center in Brick, NJ.
Mary was born in Poland and immigrated to the United States shortly after the end of World War II. She worked hard all her life and held many titles, but her favorite was that of "Babci" or grandmother. When her grandchildren would visit they could count on Babci to have a freezer stocked with frozen Polish dumplings (kopytki) and other treats that she would insist on sending you home with alongside bags of green beans, tomatoes, cucumbers and dill from her garden, only after making you something to eat because your face was "too skinny."
She loved Polish music, Pope John Paul II, Jeopardy, Judge Judy, her backyard garden (that was more like a working urban farm) and a cup of coffee so hot that it would burn the roof of her mouth.
She is predeceased by her husband Bruno, her daughter Lucine, her son George, grandson Matthew, sons-in-law "
'Richie' and 'Bobby', and most of her siblings. She leaves behind a daughter, Harriet Lakusiewicz, grandchildren Amy Lakusiewicz and husband 'Johnny', Stacy Diaz and husband Ray, Margaret Koren and husband Nick, Justin Gabrys and wife Amy, Luke Myhre and wife Jenna, ten great- grandchildren, and a sister, Harriet in Poland, and beloved niece Marylka in Germany,
In Polish you say "Sto Lat" as a way of wishing someone a happy birthday. It translates to 100 years, as in "May you have 100 years!" and Mary was just about to complete hers. Rest in peace Babci.
Funeral Services Thursday, December 28, 2023 at Holy Cross Cemetery, North Arlington, NJ will be private.
