Smithfield – Mary J. (Walsh) Gauthier, 84, passed away surrounded by loved ones on Sunday, December 15, 2024. Born in Boston, she was the daughter of the late Dr. James T. Walsh, DO and Dr. Phyllis M. (O'Brien) Walsh-Sullivan, DO and the stepdaughter of the late Daniel A. Sullivan.
Mary resided in South Attleboro and Providence before moving to Smithfield two years ago. As a young woman, she earned an associate's degree and practiced as a nurse until she started her family and stayed at home to raise her four children. When the children were young, Mary was active in her community including holding several offices with the Attleboro PTA.
Music was an integral part of Mary's life. She had a beautiful voice and participated in several choirs. She sang for years in the St. Joseph's Church Choir in Providence and was a member of the Cumberland-Lincoln Community Chorus for over a decade. In addition to her love of music, Mary enjoyed watching movies, dining out with friends and spending time with her family.
Mary was a devout Catholic. Her faith was a constant source of inspiration, guidance and comfort to her. She lived her life consistent with Christian values and was always there to lend support, encouragement and kindness to others.
Mary leaves four children, Andrew J. Gauthier and his wife, Karen, of Cape Cod, MA; Mary Katherine Carbone and her husband, Duane, of Beverly, MA; Michael T. Gauthier and his wife, Iris, of Pawtucket; and Phyllis A. Cody and her husband, Jason, of Westerly. Mary is also survived by seven beautiful grandchildren, Mia Carbone, Drew Gauthier, Liam Cody, Aidan Cody, Zoe Gauthier, Noah Gauthier and Ryley Cody; a sister, Jane Hart and her late husband, Ted, of North Attleboro, MA; two brothers, Lawrence Walsh and his wife, Gail, of Centerville, MA and Philip Walsh and his wife, Maureen, of Weymouth, MA; a sister-in-law, Diana Walsh of Cumberland and many nieces and nephews. She was the sister of the late Joan Trelease and James Walsh.
Visitation will be held on Thursday, December 19th from 4 p.m. until 7 p.m. at WILLIAM W. TRIPP Funeral Home, 1008 Newport Ave., Pawtucket. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, December 20th at 10 a.m. in St. Joseph Church, 92 Hope St., Providence.
