Mary Kathryn Vargo

Mary Kathryn Vargo, 89 of 65 E Vargo Rd. Horseheads NY, passed away peacefully on December 6th, 2024, surrounded by the love of her family and friends. Mary Kay, was a lifelong resident of the Elmira Horseheads area. The daughter of William and Helen Simpson Lynott, she is survived by her husband of 67 years, John Joseph Vargo, of Horseheads NY, son John Joseph Vargo, II, MD (Mary) of Pepper Pike, OH, daughter Karen Anne Vargo Cook, of Tallahassee, FL, grandsons John Joseph Vargo, III (Shannon) of Washington Park, CO, Kevin Gregory Vargo (Elizabeth) of Norfolk VA, Matthew Gabriel Vargo, of Pepper Pike, OH, Alexander Bradley Cook, of Chillicothe, OH, Thomas Chiles Cook, of Oklahoma City, OK, Andrew Michael Cook, of Tallahassee, FL, sister, Barbara Lynott Van Duser (Jan) Princeton Junction, NJ, predeceased sister, Joan Lynott Rogers, several nieces and nephews and recently deceased loving son, Michael William Vargo, remains in our hearts and is now reunited with mom in heaven.
Mary Kay, dedicated her life to taking care of others. Being a nurse brought her so much joy. She was a proud graduate from the Saint Joseph's School of Nursing in 1955 and practiced at St. Joseph's Hospital as well as Elcor Nursing Home in Horseheads NY.
Deeply rooted in her faith, Mary Kay, was a communicant of Saint Mary Our Mother parish. She was devoted to her family and particularly cherished the time with her legion of grandsons. A fantastic cook, it was difficult to leave the dinner table without a second (or third) helping.
The family will receive loved ones and friends at Sullivan's Funeral Home, 365 E. Franklin Street, Horseheads, New York on Thursday December 12th from 2:00 to 4:00 PM. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Mary's Church, 224 Franklin St., Elmira, NY on Friday December 13th at 10 AM. A committal service for the family will be held at St. Mary Our Mother Cemetery, Horseheads, NY following the Mass. The family wishes to thank Mary Kay's circle of friends who provided so much support over the past few years.
