Obituary for Matthew Benjamin DeTorres
Our beloved son and father to Amelia Kay passed from this life on November 25th at his home in South Ogden Utah. Matthew was a light in this world so bright that it will continue to shine through the loving glow of his daughter Amelia.
Matt was born in Ogden Utah on September 6th, 1982, Labor Day, the son of David and Norene DeTorres.
At an early age everyone knew Matt was destined to make a mark on the world and everyone who met him. Growing up in Hooper, UT and while in elementary school, along with his cousin Tory, they would spend hours building things from wood. From Bird Houses (especially for his grandma Shirley "the old Bird") to musical instruments to boxes and cabinets, there was nothing that he couldn't create and build.
After graduation from Fremont High in Plain City Matt immediately started a drywall business with his pal Brad Cotrell and successfully grew the business until he felt it time to see the country. He tried salesmanship, selling Security systems in the most dangerous communities around our nation oh the stories about that venture he told.
Matt soon decided that his creativity called him to pursue his real love, building things. Matt got his General Contractors license after working for several other companies in the Northern Utah area and then started his own company, Momentum Remodeling (momentumremodeling.com) (please visit his web site to see the things he could do!) building his company and reputation through word of mouth and referrals to the point that he was booked years out in advance due to the high demand for his work.
Matt was a member of Mensa (High IQ Society) but did not like to talk about it but proved it in everything he did. There was not one thing that Matt could not do if he decided to do it. With the advent of YouTube video's, Matt would see how people were building things and ultimately improve on the idea's making them his own. Matt was truly amazing.
Matt married Sally Knowles of Huntsville UT on October 5th 2012. They separated earlier this year.
On June 2nd, 2015 Matt was blessed with the birth of his daughter Amelia (Millie), the shining star of his life. She was his doppelganger, a beautiful replica of her handsome father. Matt lived for Millie, sharing his passion for building and creating, teaching her to use her imagination to make things from Lego villages to furniture for her myriads of dolls and stuffed animals. Through the countless stories and memories, Mille will always be proud of her daddy and we will make sure he is always a part of her life.
Matthew is survived by his daughter Amelia, his mother and father, his sister Fairlight (Asheville, NC) and his brother David and Sister-in-Law Julie (Centerville, UT), grandparents Manuel and Norene (Colorado Springs, CO), many aunties, uncles, nephews, nieces and cousins throughout the country.
He was preceded in death by his grandfather Elmer Haskell, grandmother Shirley Haskell of Roy UT, grandfather Paul Coy, grandmother Mary Jane Coy of Ocala FL, Uncle Tony DeTorres of Ocala FL and Uncle Bill Miller of Anchorage AK.
Matt will be inurned at Washington Heights Memorial Park, 4500 S Washington Blvd, in Ogden UT on December 5th, 2024 at 1:00 PM for Family Only. A Celebration of his Life will be held January 11, 2025 from 6:30-9 pm in the Ballroom of the Old Post Office, 298 24th Street, Ogden, UT. Please come and share all the good memories Matt left behind. Hope to see you all there.
Memories and condolences may be sent to the family at Myers Mortuary, Roy, UT (myers-mortuary.com).
We will miss you our son, with every breath we take. Until we see you in the next life, we hope you are finally at peace, loving and laughing in the arms of your grandparents, creating and building things for them and finding the happiness and joy that you gave and will continue to give to all of us. We love you Matters!
