Matthew Michael Griff, 37, of Mehoopany, passed away Wednesday, May 22, 2024, at Geisinger Medical Center, Scranton.
Born on May 14, 1987, in Scranton, he is the son of Bernie and Kathleen (Lafler) Griff.
Matthew attended Tunkhannock High School. At the age of 17, he made the courageous decision to serve his country by joining the United States Marine Corps.
During his time in the military, Matthew served with honor and distinction as an Infantry Sergeant with 3-5 Dark Horse Battalion and Anti-Terrorist Battalion. He took on dual roles as an assault man and machine gunner, showcasing his bravery and dedication to his fellow servicemen. Matthew embarked on multiple combat tours in Afghanistan and Iraq, where he displayed extraordinary courage. His exceptional service was recognized with numerous medals and combat awards. Matthew was currently employed by the United States Government serving in Afghanistan and Iraq.
In addition to his parents, he is survived by brother, Brad Griff (Mehoopany); aunt, Susan Rhyner (Wisconsin); uncle, Jack Lafler (Florida); and many cousins.
He is preceded in death by grandparents: John and Lois Lafler (Mehoopany), Bernard and Edith Griff (Dalton).
He will be greatly missed by his family and friends.

Family and friends are invited to attend Matthew's funeral services which will be held on Saturday, June 1, at 11 a.m. from the Sheldon-Kukuchka Funeral Home, 73 W. Tioga St., Tunkhannock,
with Pastor Darryl Sands presiding. Interment to follow in Vaughn Cemetery, Mehoopany with full military honors.
A viewing was set from 10 a.m. until the time of service on Saturday.
