Matthew David Grubb, 33, passed away on Saturday, September 16, 2023. He was a long-time resident of Morgantown, WV, and grew up in Winchester, VA.
He is survived by his loving parents, Chuck and Mary Grubb; his long-time partner, Brianna Maze; his two loyal labs, Mattis and Baker; his PaPaw Treadway; aunts, uncles, and many beloved cousins and friends across the country.
After earning his bachelor's and master's in electrical engineering from West Virginia University, he went on to work as a senior systems engineer at NASA. He was the leading factor in launching the first West Virginia satellite into space which is still operational today. Thanks to his recent contributions and leadership, more satellites will be launching in the near future. He was consistently recognized for his work ethic and dedication. He loved his career, and he loved his colleagues.
Matt had many hobbies outside of work and anyone who knew him, knows he excelled at them all. Matt was an avid and accomplished outdoorsman who loved hitting the trails with friends on one of his many mountain bikes. He conquered many technical hiking trails across the US, with Coopers Rock holding a special place in his heart. He enjoyed brewing beer with his friends and visiting craft breweries near and far. He holds the unofficial record for visiting all Trillium breweries in Boston in less than 24 hours. He had an enthusiastic and eclectic love of music, with favorites of Wu-Tang Clan, Hall & Oates, Sturgill Simpson, and the Grateful Dead. He especially loved live music and probably attended more Greensky Bluegrass concerts than anyone else.
Matt loved to cheer for the WVU Mountaineers, the Cleveland Cavs, and most of all the Cleveland Browns. He was especially proud of his many fantasy football wins. Matt took pride in his abundant home projects and found joy in the manual labor of building things with his hands. His most recent pride and joy was the beautiful new deck he spent many hours building at his home. This will now be a beautiful place to sit with his memory.
Matt could easily make friends anywhere he went. He has friends across the country, most of which are lasting friendships from his childhood. He loved each one of them and interacted with them all on a near-daily basis. He enjoyed many nights playing video games with them, sitting and chatting at Fishbowl or Black Bear, attending Friendsgiving, and attempting to steal their dogs any chance he had. He made many trips to visit friends and enjoyed hosting them in Morgantown whenever they wanted. Matt was extremely loyal and would drop anything to help his friends, doing so many times throughout his life.
As an only child, Matt had a strong bond with his parents. He loved them dearly and enjoyed their daily talks. He enjoyed floating and fishing on the river with his Pops from whom he inherited his strong work ethic. They were always working on a house project together during visits or sharing a beer and talking about life. He loved his mom and inherited her kindness and spirit. They would stay up chatting until the early-morning hours, way after everyone else had gone to bed. He would answer any questions and immediately fix their computer issues as any good engineer and son would do. He loved attending the yearly Christmas Eve party hosted by his parents where he was surrounded by family and friends. There are many stories his parents can tell of his funny childhood antics, all of which contributed to the amazing man they raised.
Matt shared a home and life with Brianna and their two dogs. Matt was her biggest supporter and always cheered her on in everything she did. They have many memories of traveling to new states, and simply enjoying every moment together even when trapped at home. Matt was patient and kind with her, even when trying to teach her how to mountain bike. He never said no to any house project she suggested, and even tagged along for Starbucks and Target trips, to his dismay. However, he did make fun of her love of reality TV. Their relationship was founded on friendship and love, being the other's best friend and unyielding support system.
Matt loved Mattis and Baker and spoiled them every chance he had. They could do no wrong in his eyes, even when Baker put a hole in the wall, or when Mattis dove in mud at the dog park. He loved taking them for walks on the trail and taking them swimming to watch Mattis cannonball off the diving board. Both dogs were deeply loyal to Matt and looked forward to their daily nap time cuddles.
Everyone who knew Matt, knows he was a great man. He accomplished more in his 33 years than most will in a lifetime. He will be missed by many people, and he will always be in the hearts of those who love and knew him. Matt would want us to treasure our great memories of him and live life to the fullest.
To honor Matt's wishes, there will be no funeral arrangements, but a Celebration of Life will be planned in the future. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to any Humane Society of your choosing in Matt's honor.

I had the pleasure of working with Matt on a project at Sandia National Laboratories six years ago. We were using a satellite emulation system he and his team had developed. Matt was one of the most knowledgeable, sharing and helpful persons I have ever worked with. I'm greatly saddened to hear of his death. I'll always remember what a kind person Matt was. Bob Cole
