Matt Hunefeld, 61, of Graettinger, formerly of Spirit Lake, passed away Monday July 3, 2023, at Avera McKennan Hospital with family by his side.
A memorial service will be held on Friday, July 7th at 11:30am at the Graettinger American Legion Post #162. Visitation will be held one hour prior to service at the Legion.
Matthew Lee Hunefeld was born December 12, 1961, to Fred and Marilyn (Hawkins) Hunefeld in Fort Dodge. Matt was baptized and confirmed at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Spirit Lake. He was educated in Spirit Lake and was a member of the Sons of the Legion Post 162. After high school he was a short order cook in Iowa and North Carolina. While living in North Carolina Matt fell in love with the east coast and the ocean. Detailing cars was another passion that Matt enjoyed.
Matt had many hobbies from collecting treasures to cheering on the Green Bay Packers and Iowa Hawkeyes. The biggest treasure Matt cherished were his nieces and nephews. When the holidays rolled around, he looked forward to family get-togethers. But it was the banks of the river where Matt loved to spend his free time. All were invited to cast a fishing line with him as long as you didn't touch his poles or head lamp. Besides fishing stories, there were many stories that he told over the years. From giving rides to watching dogs Matt was always willing to lend a helping hand. In death Matt again extended his helping hand by being an organ donor.
Those left to cast a line in Matt's memory are his son Zach; siblings Mark (Shayla) Hunefeld of Graettinger; Luke Hunefeld of Emmetsburg; LeAnn (Doug Hoffman) Dietrich of Graettinger; Elizabeth (Derek) Hoffman of Graettinger; Sister-in-Law Bonnie Hunefeld of Urbandale; Uncles Ronnie Hawkins of Fort Dodge; Gary (Liz) Hawkins of Fort Dodge; many nieces, nephews, and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, grandparents, brothers Rick and Randy, nephew Scott Hunefeld, and stepfather Marv Knutson.
In honor of Matt, his family requests that you wear Iowa Hawkeye or Green Bay Packer attire.
