Matthew P. Mathies, age 59 died on Sunday, October 15, 2023, at his home in Watkins, MN. A Celebration of Life will be held Saturday October 21, 2023, from 3-6 PM at Ertl Funeral Home in Watkins, MN.
Matthew Peter Mathies, the son of Melvin and Anna (Eichinger) Mathies was born on September 29, 1964, in St. Cloud, MN. He graduated from Kimball High School in 1983 and continued his education at St. Cloud State University. He was united in marriage to Margaret (Peggy) Epsky in Kimball on November 16, 1996. Matthew’s first job was doing farm work on his neighbor’s farm. He began his career working with his father and uncle at their construction business (Mathies Construction). As a member of the Local Union 633, he was a cement finisher for the next 27 years. Matthew will be remembered for his hog roasts, and the many apple, black walnut and maple trees that he planted. He enjoyed old time farm equipment and tractors, farming, muzzle loading, fishing, threshing and spending time with his family and friends at his farm. He often said he considered himself the "Richest Man in the World".
Matthew is survived by his wife Margaret “Peggy” Mathies of Watkins, MN; stepdaughter, Kaylene Epsky of Zimmerman, MN; mother Anna Smith of Kimball, MN; sisters Cynthia (Ron) Krueger of Sauk Rapids, Margaret (Tom) Kotula of Sauk Rapids.
Matthew was preceded in death by his father; Melvin and stepfather Sam Smith.To plant trees in memory, please visit the Sympathy Store.
