Mattie Pearl Curry passed away on Saturday, April 26, 2025, in Covington, Kentucky, at the age of 83. Born in Anniston, Alabama, on February 20, 1942, she was the beloved daughter of Serowe and Mae Lizzie Curry, who preceded her in death. Though she had no children of her own, Mattie was a devoted sister, aunt, and friend-she was loyal and deeply present. She is survived by her siblings: Daisy Barnes, Florene Moore, Tennie Love, Christine Bard (Donald Bard), Willie Curry, Joseph Curry, and Christine Swain and was preceded in death by her cherished sister, Lois Curry. She leaves behind her nieces-Christine Brunt, Sybrina Moore, Constance Barnes-Watson (Patrick Watson), Stacy Curry, and Ashley Love Elliott (Kevin A. Elliott), and Kayla Roberson-and a wide circle of great and great-great-nieces and nephews, including Quentin McClellan, Cedric Moore, Konecia Moore, Keshana Moore, Ricky Carr, Emani Watson, Kyra Dennis, and Kevin Douglas Love Elliott. Whether it was a kindergarten graduation or a doctoral hooding, Mattie was there: cheering, clapping, and beaming with pride. She earned the nickname "junior citizen" because she refused to age in spirit-full of laughter, movement, and light. She had a rare ability to turn acquaintances into family and make family feel seen and loved. She was a connector-calling, checking in, remembering birthdays, and always going a layer deeper to build meaningful relationships. Though born in Alabama, Mattie was a proud "Bronx girl" living in New York for over five decades. Her career was as vibrant as her personality-beginning at NY Telephone Company, followed by a long tenure at Blue Cross Blue Shield, and later joining Disney to support the Broadway production of The Lion King. In her later years, she brought that same energy to Starbucks, where she quickly became a spirited and beloved barista. Beyond her professional life, she was a woman of deep faith. Mattie was a longtime member of Trinity Baptist Church in the Bronx and Greater Centennial A.M.E. Zion Church in Mt. Vernon, NY. Beyond the workplace, she was a licensed esthetician and a proud graduate of the Ophelia DeVore Modeling and Charm School, that aligned with her lifelong love of wellness and beauty. Whether she was gliding through African dance classes in Harlem or doing wellness walks through the Bronx and Manhattan, she moved through the world with confidence and vitality. Later in life, she moved to Covington, Kentucky, where she would say, "If I didn't already live here, I'd move here!" She became a joyful presence at Panorama Apartments-co-leading the birthday club, attending Sunday services, and spreading warmth wherever she went. Mattie loved Italian food, long conversations, and making others laugh. Her favorite saying, "Live with Passion," wasn't just a motto-it was her way of life. Mattie left the world better, brighter, and more joyful simply by being in it. Her legacy lives on in every heart she touched, every life she lifted, and every memory that still brings a smile.
