It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Mrs. Mattie H. Mobley.
On behalf of the staff and management of Strong & Jones Funeral Home, Inc., we would like to extend our deepest sympathy to the family of Mrs. Mattie H. Mobley.
Mattie Hall Mobley was born in the Chaires area of Leon County, Florida, on February 4, 1914, the tenth of eleven children to the late Alice and George Hall. Mattie's commitment to Christ began at nine years old when she was baptized and joined St. Peter Missionary Church. Her lifelong Christian journey continued until her death as a member of Bethel Missionary Baptist Church.
Mattie was educated in the public schools of Leon County, where she graduated from Lincoln High School. She continued her education by attending Florida A&M University with a primary focus on education. Realizing the importance of being an entrepreneur, Mattie completed cosmetology training and became an independent business owner in Tallahassee for over 30 years before retiring from her beauty salon in 1989. Always a nurturer, Mattie embarked on a new career path as a home caregiver and became certified by the State of Florida. She provided home health services to the economically disadvantaged until 2007. Mattie has always understood the importance of giving back to the community and has provided housing, financial and moral support to many young people attending Florida A & M University. She has also been a role model for the many young men and women who grew up in her community of Allen Subdivision.
Mattie understood the assignment of being politically involved and registered to vote in 1948 and became a lifelong election poll worker. The late Rev. C.K. Steele influenced her activism. She became actively involved in the NAACP and was passionate about her role in Women in NAACP (WIN).
Another love of Mattie's was the Capital City Garden Club, which she joined in 1954. She was known as the fundraising queen, and when she became President in 1969, she secured a loan to construct a building on land donated to the Garden Club.
Mattie's understanding of the importance of giving back to the community was unparalleled. Her role as a mentor and role model for the many young women and men who grew up in her community of Allen Subdivision is a testament to her selflessness and generosity. Mattie's impact on her community is immeasurable, and her legacy of service will continue to inspire generations to come.
