Maura K. Mengel, 28, of Mount Carmel, passed away suddenly on Sunday, April 13, 2025.
Maura was born in Danville on September 30, 1996. She was the beloved daughter of Stephanie (Owens) Huber and Christopher J. Mengel. She came into the world with an exuberance that continued throughout her life.
Maura spent her early years in Jonestown, but later moved to Mount Carmel as a young girl. Maura graduated from Mount Carmel High School in 2015, attended Penn College of Technology, and graduated from Schuylkill Technology Center School of Nursing in 2023.
Maura's path to becoming a nurse was not easy, but she persevered and graduated first in her class. Becoming a nurse was Maura's proudest moment.
Maura was an excellent nurse and advocate for her patients. Maura worked as a caretaker for disabled adults, a nurse's aide in various facilities in our area, and a nurse at Ridgeview Nursing Home in Shenandoah and Penn Manor in Selinsgrove.
Maura was a beautiful girl with a contagious laugh and smile. She was smart, funny, fiercely loyal, hardworking, and devoted to her family and friends. Maura lived her life in the service of others. She was always willing to lend a hand to anyone who was in need. As the eldest daughter of her family, Maura was the epitome of what a big sister and daughter should be. As a teenager, Maura took care of her mother and siblings when her mother was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. Maura was also there to support her mother when her brother Mason was in a serious bike accident.
Maura's superpowers were her ability to organize, grocery shop on a budget, manage the household spending and budgeting, cleaning, and cooking. Maura also tackled many building projects in their house from painting, drywalling, and laying flooring. Maura's money-saving habits were legendary and she was proud to call herself "thrifty."
Maura was an avid animal lover her whole life. She was the proud dog mom of two crazy Great Danes, Mika and Maisy. Maura liked nothing better than taking her dogs out for walks and hanging out with them on the couch.
Maura enjoyed spending time with family and friends, vacationing at the beach, swimming at the local pool, going out to dinner, watching scary movies with her brother Max, using her creative talents to make crafts, and going to haunted attractions during the Halloween season. Maura also had a special relationship with her nephew Michael and she enjoyed spending time with him.
Maura attended church at Jonestown Methodist Church and Our Lady of Mount Carmel.
Maura is survived by her mother Stephanie Huber and step-father Andrew Huber, father Christopher Mengel and his wife Joan Mengel, maternal grandmother Louise Gudonis-Blanchard, paternal grandparents John and Pat Mengel, siblings Madison Mengel and her partner Tyler Owens, Mason Mengel, Max Huber, Syler Mengel, Ani Mengel, nephew Michael Owens, niece Cataleya Mengel, and many aunts, uncles, and cousins.
Maura was preceded in death by her maternal great-grandparents Margaret and Edward Flowers, Uncle Edward A. Flowers, Aunt Rita Flowers, and maternal grandfather Jose Blanchard.
