Maury Foster Wolfson passed away on May 13, 2025 at his home in
Corpus Christi, TX, surrounded by his family, at the age of 91.
Maury was born in Corpus on June 17, 1933, the treasured second son of Abe and Dora Wolfson.
He graduated from Roy Miller High School and attended the University of Texas at Austin where he was a member of the Sigma Alpha Mu fraternity. In Corpus, he met the love of his life, Rosalyn Block, and they married in 1957.
In 1959, Maury and Rosalyn welcomed their first child, son Barry. Two years later, their family was complete with the arrival of daughter, Margo. Maury was an involved and devoted father, husband, and grandfather.
Maury was committed to helping his community. He worked with his father and brother, Sylvan, in the family business, Wolfson Furniture Company, on Leopard Street. Corpus natives will remember him from radio and television commercials for Wolfson's, speaking both English, and fluent Spanish. Maury's commitment to Wolfson's was legendary, and he and his brother continued to operate the store after their father's stroke and subsequent death in 1988. Maury kept the store running after Sylvan's death in 2004, until 2007, when Wolfson's closed after more than 70 years in business.
Maury's work ethic was admired by all who knew him. Just months before his death, at the age of almost 92, Maury was still running another family business, Block Realty, collecting rents from tenants and managing maintenance and other business matters.
Maury was deeply committed to the Jewish community, serving as president of B'nai Israel Synagogue and Congregation Beth Israel for many years, and also serving on the Boards of Directors of both congregations. His last act as President was to help facilitate the merger of those congregations.
In the late 1960s, he was President of the Jewish Community Center (JCC) in Corpus. In the 1980s, he was Chairman of the Human Relations Commission for the City of Corpus Christi.
Additionally, he was recognized as the "Man of the Year" for the National Conference of Christians and Jews (now the Fellowship of Christians and Jews) for his work promoting the mission of that organization and, in 2010, he was honored with the Lifetime Achievement Award from Congregation Beth Israel.
Maury was an accomplished tennis player, playing "A" Division competitive tennis into his early 80s. He also played slow-pitch softball for more than a decade with his brother and nephew on the local JCC team.
He was a loyal fan of the Texas Longhorns and was overjoyed that so many of his family members graduated from his alma mater, including both his children and grandchildren.
Maury loved music, from Classical to Big Band, Satchmo, Barry Manilow, Elton John, Chicago, and his all-time favorite, Lawrence Welk.
Maury is preceded in death by his loving parents, Abe and Dora, brother Sylvan Wolfson and his wife, Gloria, mother and father-in-law Mary and Abe Block, brother-in-law Stanley Block, son-in-law Eric Strull and nephew Steve Wolfson.
Left behind to cherish his memory are his beloved wife of 67 years, Rosalyn, son Barry Wolfson, daughter Margo Strull, grandson Alec Strull and his wife, Montana, granddaughter Courtney Strull and her partner Andrew Mihalick, great-grandson Brooks Strull, nephew Bruce Wolfson and his wife Sherry, nephew Randy Block and his wife Caroline, niece Michelle Goldsmith, and sister-in-law, Cathy Block, along with several great nieces and nephews and many loving cousins and friends.
Maury was the rock of his family, a loyal and loving person. He took care of everyone around him and his loss is immense for all those who knew and loved him. He will be deeply missed.
The family would like to thank Dr. John Schulze and Dr. Gregg Silverman for their many years of devoted care, along with caregivers Lucy, Mary, Leonor, and Blasa, for their compassion for Maury in his final months. A special thanks, as well, to Suzy Harris Hilliard for all of her help and loving care and being like a second daughter to Maury.
A funeral service will take place on Thursday, May 15, at Seaside Memorial Park at 2:00 p.m. with a reception immediately following at Congregation Beth Israel. Serving as pallbearers are Bruce Wolfson, Sean Wolfson, Kenneth Maltz, Myron Grossman, Robert Harris, Richard Harris, Dr. Gregg Silverman, and Don Feferman. Honorary pallbearers are Randy Block, Larry Maltz, Eddie Mange, Dr. Jerry Silverman, Dr. Barry Goodriend, Dr. John Schulze and LA Train.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Maury's memory can be made to Congregation Beth Israel.
