Passed away on August 26, 2025 at the age of 98. Predeceased by his wife, Lily Ostro Grossman. Survived by his children, Susan Keenan (Bruce), Mark Grossman (Sandy) and Amy Iserson (Andy). Grandchildren Sumir, Alessandra and Rachel Keenan, Hari and Dhyan Grossman, Lily and Jordan Iserson, great grandchild Romy Nyman. Max is also survived by his partner, Estelle Gorfine, her sons Lee Gorfine and Larry Gorfine, and several loving nieces and nephews.
Max was born on a farm in Wellsville, NY and was very proud of the town he grew up in. He was inducted into the Wellsville High School Sports Hall of Fame and the Jewish Sports Hall of Fame in Rochester for his many athletic accomplishments in Baseball, Track and Basketball. Max created an "Old Timers" Softball League for World War II Veterans that became the Irondequoit Senior Softball League. The League enjoyed a close partnership with Senior players from Ottawa, Canada and got together for a friendly championship game
for many years. Max played actively until he was 92. Max moved to Rochester to study for his Bar Mitzvah, leaving his family and living with relatives at the young age of 12. Later his family moved to Rochester permanently and he attended Benjamin Franklin High School where he met his wife Lily and his later partner Estelle. He served in both the Merchant Marines and the Army during World War II.
Max had several occupations, always striving to provide a better life for his family. He achieved great respect from his work on Joseph Avenue as the head of the Joseph Avenue Businessmen's Association. He worked with the State of NY in the Model Cities program to improve the area around Joseph Avenue, working with the Mayor and many local leaders. In the 1970's Max worked with HUD and the State of NY again, helping to improve the areas devastated by Hurricane Agnes in the Southern Tier. Before retiring Max founded a commercial mortgage brokerage company with his son and nephew.
Max always had a smile and a joke for everyone. He loved a good card game, watching baseball and being with his family.
We would like to thank all of the Aides and Serenity House for their care of Max, you made his last year comfortable and he was happy for your friendship. Thank you also to Dr. Dunne, Nicole, Hannah and Dr. Fleming for giving Max the last several years so that he could enjoy his family and friends.
