Max Otto Julien 19 May 1997 – 19 February 2024
Max ended his life in Southern Utah at the age of 26. He struggled silently for most of his life, but he has suffered severe mental illness since the age of 18. Max was in residential treatment at Soulegria Leadership Ranch where he made huge progress battling his disease.
Max Otto Julien was born in Louisville, Kentucky on 19 May 1997 to Mitch and Susan Evancho Julien. He graduated from Trinity High School and attended the University of Kentucky. Max was a gentle soul who towered over his family. He had a quick wit, was intelligent, kind, intuitive, and wise, and had a love of history. He was a natural leader and mentor amongst his peers. He loved his three dogs Lily, Otto, and Ollie, hiking in the woods, and fishing with his dad and grandpa. He loved basketball and would play at 6:00 a.m. with men from the Utah community. Sadly, the disease didn't allow him to recognize his gifts and the potential others saw in him.
His maternal grandmother, Sarah Jane Allen Chapman, and his paternal grandfather, Marshall Otto Julien, preceded him in death. Some of his last words were that he was going to be with his grandpa whom he loved.
The loved ones he leaves behind include his parents, Mitch and Susan, his three sisters, Claire Mulloy (Joseph) of Louisville, KY, Grace Blevins (JP) of Lexington, KY, and Sarah Julien (Blake Alexander) of New York City, nephews, Patrick Mulloy, John Paul Blevins, and Marshall Blevins, and niece, Anna Claire Mulloy. His maternal grandfather Robert Max Chapman and his paternal grandmother Nancy Louise Rogers Julien, along with numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins, all grieve his loss.
We're thankful to all who have prayed for Max and for all who work tirelessly to help those who suffer with mental illness and their loved ones. We thank the staff at Soulegria who gave their big hearts, immense talents, and gifts to support Max – Tyler Olson, Tyler Barton, Tyler Hinton, Rick Visser, Shane Currin, and Raven Cain. Please pray for the friends Max made along his journey who face mental health challenges.
Peace be with you until we meet again, sweet Max. We will hold you in our hearts forever.
Visitation will be 4-7 p.m. Friday, Feb 23rd, at Pearson's, 149 Breckenridge Lane, Louisville. A private service at St. Francis in the Fields and burial in Cave Hill Cemetery with The Rev. Clint Wilson will take place on Saturday.
We ask for continued prayers for the family and all who struggle with this disease. In memory of Max, donations can be mailed to Soulegria Leadership Ranch, 11 South Main Street, Hurricane, UT 84737. A memorial has been set up to honor Max at Shangri La Event Center. Max worked here, and 100% of the proceeds go towards scholarships for clients of Soulegria. You can Venmo @shangrilaeventcenter.

I was Max's Equine assisted learning teacher at Soulegria for a time about a year ago and my son also recently worked with Max at the golf course. He was a quiet, kind soul. You could feel his strong spirit every time you were near him. As you can see by his "Past, Present, and Future" poster he is holding, he had a great desire to overcome his weaknesses and even hoped to be a father some day. He loved deeply. I will miss him!

My son also goes to Soulegria, and lives at home. Not long after he first started at the ranch, he was having a rough day and refusing to go, even refusing to leave his room. Max came over to our house and calmed him, helped him to feel better and talked him into going. We love Max. First time I saw him, I thought he was a big as a bear. Then I looked at his face and thought, "Teddy bear, that is." We are so sorry for your loss and grieve with you.

Max came and helped us put in our sod on the Friday before he died. He and my husband had a good talk about Kentucky and their Ale 8 One, ginger ale they both loved. The group of boys he was with helped so much. It was so kind of Max to come. Sending so much love and prayers to his dear family.
