Born July 20, 1923, in
Burnsville, NC, she was the daughter of Rev. James Holland Black and Lillie Honeycutt Black (both deceased).
She was predeceased in death by her husband, Sam Deakins Pangle; a daughter, Brenda Pangle Edalgo; a son-in-law, Anthony Lamar Romeo; a sister, Ruby Black Haynes; three brothers: Lloyd Black (Doris), Ralph Black (Paulette), and Espie "Bob" Black.
She is survived by her daughter, Sabra Briggs Romeo; granddaughters: Sabrena Romeo-DeStephanis (Daniel); Tamara Romeo Foust (David); Kristina Edalgo McCarthy (John) and Jamie Edalgo Conder (Mike); six great-grandsons: David Foust, Jr (Lauren), Anthony "Chad" Kitchen-Foust (Damian), Andrew Foust (Taylor), Tyson Conder, Evan McCarthy, and Eric McCarthy; three great, great grandchildren: Essie Foust, Jessa Foust, and David Foust III; and a host of nieces and nephews.
She was a gift to all those who knew her and loved her rare strength of heart; she will be forever missed.
She loved spoiling her grandchildren and wrote a 322-page book at the age of 98 for all of her family.
Maxine served in many roles at Commonwealth Baptist Church, including Chair of the Board of Deacons, Church Treasurer and member of the Finance Committee. She also served on the Mecklenburg Baptist Association Finance Board.
She was in Bible Study Fellowship (B.S.F.) for sixteen years where God graciously gave her the opportunity to be a Group Leader twelve of those years.
She joined Christ Covenant Presbyterian Church and was active in the Senior Adult Coram-Deo Sunday School Class while serving in B.S.F.
Maxine began her forty-year banking career with First National Bank in
Asheville, NC. After moving to Charlotte, she joined North Carolina National Bank (NCNB) where she worked in many roles, including Branch Manager, Loan Officer, and retired as a Bank Officer with NCNB (now Bank of America).
A Funeral Service will be held Saturday, January 10, 2026 at Christ Covenant Presbyterian Church, 800 Fullwood Lane,
Matthews, NC 28105. The Rev. Bruce Creswell will be officiating. Heritage Funeral Service, Weddington, NC will be in charge.
Family graveside burial service will be in the Honeycutt-Price Cemetery in
Burnsville, NC, the following day.
Memorials are requested to be made to Christ Covenant Church,
Samaritan's Purse, or Novant Health Hospice.
