A celebration of life will be held at a later date.

Maxwell Brenn Owens was born to Brian and Neva Owens on born February 27, 2002, in Algona. He grew up in Algona and Attended Algona High School.

Maxwell worked as a cook at Pizza Ranch in Algona for over four years, where his friendliness and easygoing nature made him a favorite among his coworkers. Outside of work, Maxwell had a deep love for the outdoors. He enjoyed long walks, watching sunsets, admiring clouds, and viewing the beauty of the sky. The Whittemore Pits was a special place for him, where he often went to swim and find peace in nature.

A gifted artist, Maxwell loved to draw and expressed his creativity in many ways. He was an avid fan of anime and an enthusiastic reader, and he had a talent for languages, teaching himself between eight and nine different ones. He had a love for animals, especially for his six cats and two dogs.

Seven years ago, Maxwell received a heart transplant, beginning a challenging journey that he faced with courage and resilience. He died Tuesday, August 5, 2025, at the University of Iowa Hospital in Iowa City. He was 23.

Maxwell is survived by his mother, Neva; brothers, Will Leininger, Jake Anderson, Bo Owens, and Kaleb Owens; and nephews Jayce, Landen, Ashton, Camden, Eli, and Ackley. He is also survived by many cousins and friends.

He was preceded in death by his father, Brian; his brother, Shane Ballenger; and his maternal and paternal grandparents.

Maxwell's family would like to express their heartfelt gratitude to the University of Iowa Hospital for the exceptional care and support provided over the past seven years, and to the Algona community for their kindness and compassion.
