Melvin Bates Obituary

He served with distinction in the U.S. Army for 20 years, including active duty in Vietnam, Desert Strom, and Kuwait. He continued his service by dedicating his career to supporting veterans. He was employed as a nurse with the Bath VA Medical Center and retired in 2001.
Melvin will be remembered as a proud veteran, a family man, an avid hunter, Watkins Glen racing enthusiast, and fierce supporter of his fellow soldier.
Melvin is survived by three children: Melvin (Elayne Youmans) Bates Jr. of Montour Falls, Heather (George) Pavlick of Addison, Jesse Bates of Corning; 9 grandchildren: Brandon, Austin, Emily, Ashley, Sean, Kailesa Wray, Cameron, Catlyn, Chelsey, Conner, Anthony( Danielle), and Nathan; great-grandchildren: Brentleigh, Braxton, Brian, Brian, Jelani; siblings: Victoria Walker and Stanley Zyla; best friend: Geno Dunn, along with many nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, Melvin was predeceased by grandsons: Brian Bates and Zachary Bates; siblings: Jean Pellett and Patricia Scott.
Family and friends are invited to attend a graveside service at Bath National Cemetery on Thursday, August 7, 2025 at 11:00am with full military honors. Flint Funeral in Addison has been entrusted with his final arrangements.
