Michael "Mykal Kafi" Edwards, 62, of New Britain, passed away peacefully on Thursday, December 25, 2025.
Michael was born in Hartford, son of the late Vincent and Vanrice (Morrison) Edwards, and graduated from Northwest Catholic High School and Manchester Community College. He was employed with "The Village," a nonprofit children and families community services agency, providing counseling and support services to the psychiatric department. Michael was a well-researched and passionate advocate for children and the community, and he often found himself counseling the psychiatrists within the agency. He also served as a personal guidance counselor to teenagers in the program, escorting them to appointments and school, and helping them navigate the challenges they faced within their families and the community. Michael also worked at "My People" Community Services, where he offered interventions and services to help individuals and families navigate life's challenges. He encouraged young people to be aware of what was going on around them and emphasized reading about current events to educate themselves. Michael was passionate about helping the underserved and had quite the impact on the community in other ways as well. He had a show called "On the Square," on Nutmeg TV, a nonprofit community access provider, which is a platform for community expression where he and his panelists addressed current cultural issues.
Michael was a loving son, brother, uncle, and friend. He will be remembered as a man who cared very deeply for his family, friends, young adults, and his community. Michael was very well-spoken, had very strong opinions, and enjoyed doing things his own way, but he had a heart of gold, and everything came from a place of love. He was a debater at heart and loved to analyze current issues. Michael would peel the layers off a problem to get to the source, stood confidently and strongly by his convictions, and was an advocate for women's rights. Michael also had a great sense of humor and a smile that would light up a room.
Michael loved to read and research topics of all interests. He enjoyed playing and watching basketball, especially the Men's and Women's UCONN Huskies. He also loved football and the Dallas Cowboys, watching DC and Marvel movies, and reading comic books.
Michael is survived by his sisters, Paulette Morrison and Karen Hall, both of Hartford; his brother, Dwight Edwards of Boise, ID; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, god siblings, other relatives, and friends.
Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his siblings, Beverly Waugh of Boynton Beach, FL, Deloris Wilks of Bloomfield, Fitzherbert Lewis of St. Thomas, Jamaica, Reynold Ramsay of East Hartford, and Vincent Edwards, Jr. of Hartford.
His family will receive friends on Saturday, January 3, 4-5 p.m., with a Celebration of Life, 5 p.m., at Carmon Funeral Home, 807 Bloomfield Ave., Windsor.
