Michael "Mike"' Irvin Harrig, 72, passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family on January 31, 2025. He was born in Louisville, Kentucky on January 24, 1953 to his parents, Fred J. Harrig Sr. and Elizabeth C. (Harley) Harrig. Mike grew up in the Portland neighborhood of Louisville, KY, attended St. Cecelia Catholic School and Parish and Ahrens Trade High School. Michael served in the Air National Guard and later joined his brother at Belknap, Brown Keiser and Southern Glazier's Wine and Spirits as a Liquor Sales Representative until his retirement.
In the 72 years that Michael lived, he was many things to so many people. He was a brother, a dad, a pappaw, a hero, an uncle, a cousin, coach, and a friend. Mike truly had a heart of gold, always looking out or his family and friends. He would love to tease and joke around and found joy in bringing a smile to everyone's face. If he could do anything to take burdens off others, he found a way and never hesitated to lend a helping hand. He didn't just live for his own happiness but always for the happiness of those he loved the most. He never failed to show up for any of the important moments whether it be a happy or a somber occasion. He never missed a ball game, a dance recital, a birthday party or event, and he was always the first one there if something went wrong. Mike would give you his last penny if that's what it took to help. There was nothing more important to Mike than his family. Even after suffering from several strokes
limiting his speech and memory, Mike's heart and core values never changed. His face always lit up the moment any one of his grandchildren entered the room and was the glue that held our family together.
He is preceded in death by his parents and his younger brother, Raymond Harrig. Mike is survived by his two children, Shannan Marie Harrig and Dustin Michael Harrig; two grandchildren, Blake Michael Harrig and Jade Briannan Simpson; two great-grandsons, Blake "Jamie" Harrig and Michael Harrig; one brother, Fred Joseph Harrig, Jr. (Bonni) and a sister-in-law, Sandy Travis; along with several generations of cousins, nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be held Wednesday, February 5th from 4-8 p.m. at J. B. Ratterman & Sons, 2114 W. Market St. His funeral service will be held Thursday, February 6th at 12 noon at J. B. Ratterman & Sons with burial to follow in St. Michael Cemetery
