I don't understand why, but somehow, I find it extremely sad and really difficult to leave a remembrance for someone who was an incredible friend, who made a huge difference in my formative years, who was not terribly old, and who should still be with us today.
Mike was so generous. He was brilliant. Looking back, I realize that he introduced us, his friends in Williamstown High School, to some of the culture that he had left behind when he came to Williamstown, VT. But just by sharing and having fun, not in any arrogant way, because he was a fun, amazing, and totally welcoming and unpretentious guy.
I think everyone who knows Mike knows what I mean. He was gifted, he was inclusive and knew how to relate to folks. And, (you know, this is not about me but) I think I'm pretty smart, but he could usually crush me in a friendly game of chess, and he had such an incredible breadth of knowlege! He was a real eye opener, and was always happy to share, and also to join us in exploring our own interests.
I can't say how much I appreciated seeing him at my father's funeral. We spent some time to catch up; it was almost, but never quite, like old times.
Also, I'd like to say how much I appreciated Terry and Will (G-d bless his soul) providing my home away from home by generously allowing me to stay for extended periods, when I was working after school and my family home was a lot further out of town.
I'm can't express myself -- I feel a real sense of loss, because Mike and his family were such a part of my life. Goodbye, Mike. And, really, ... thank you.
